I run both, currently have an Assegai on my HT and DHF on the full squish. I change them around depending on conditions and how I'm riding...
been running a DHR2 on the front recently - i like it more than the DHF. less vague in the lean angles.
assegai is great but it has a weird grip pattern when its leaned over, sometimes itll let go randomly(ive only ran the 3c MT)
DHR2 and Shorty2 are 90% of the Maxxis front tires i see on racers bikes in the Southeast at the moment.
Non-racers (and the he-GOAT)seem to LOVE Assegais, but I have noticed that when i see Assegais on the front of local world cup pro bikes, they usually have the transition knobs cut out.
The DHR does everything the DHF does, just better.
I find that I can get away with the Assegai in the MaxxTerra compound for most enduro races, whereas I tend to need the MaxxGrip in the DHF. Thus, the EXO+ Assegai has become my go-to tire, as it rolls faster than a MaxxGrip DHF.
For proper DH, it’s a bit tougher. The MaxxGrip Assegai can feel like overkill for most situations, and I tend to prefer a DHR II or DHF in DH casing. In sloppy conditions that don’t quite warrant the Shorty, I do find that the DHF clears best. The Assegai doesn’t clear well at all.
Assegai is... OK. I prefer the speed and snap of a DHF in summer and bite of a Mary in the sloppy months.
I guess the cool kids are running DHR up front these days. I found it had a weird way of sliding sideways if not leaned over. Kind of sketchy on greasy rock faces but felt great everywhere else.
Have been loving the DH Maxxgrip Assegai up front on my long travel trail/enduro/sometimes DH bike. Feels like a tractor tire in all the best ways. It rolls slow, but gives me gobs of confidence and I think it's very predictable. But I'm also a big tall guy who carves big wide lazy turns, not so much with the quick snappy inside lines that require slapping the bass. I think that's why I like the transition knobs. Funny enough, Greg designed the tire and I think that's a pretty good description of his riding style, too.
DHR front and rear.
DHR has wider middle knobs that i think make it a more predictable smooth transition from middle to side knob.
Who knows if it's real or all my head. Probably all in my head.
I’ve been running the continental Kryptotal DH SuperSoft. Amazing tire up front. I’m going to experiment with one of their other tires in the rear so it rolls a bit faster
I swapped over to Kryptotal FR DH/SS up front and Kryptotal RE DH/S in the back this fall. I didn't get as many days on them as I'd have liked before the gross weather set in here, but I was really impressed with how they hooked up on dirt. The Soft compound does seem to break away on rock/slabs a bit easier than the MAGI-X compound I had out back before. I also raced a small DH in very muddy conditions and found they didn't shed mud all that well compared to the DH-22's I had before, but they're not a mud tire anyway.
I’d say they are dry dirt to hard conditions tire. Don’t think they work well in mud or greasy stuff.
I haven't had any issues with them on normal wet/damp late season conditions, but in deeper mud they have issues. Though if you live in an area that has more loose soil or has a wet winter you can ride through, you could always just run an Argotal up front.
Went from running DHF to Assegai and really like the Assegai for almost all conditions. It suffers a bit on really firm hardpack trails and it really likes to grab onto the side of ruts and try and pull you into/up the edge.
Have you ever tried the Xynotal on the rear? I thought that might be a good dry combo for summer. Kryptotal/Xynotal. Because the XY says it has less rolling resistance.
then in wet try the Argotal/Kryptotal.
I listen to a podcast with Charlie Hatton who did tire development with the Atherton team and Continental. He said he’s been running Kryptotal F on both wheels. I’m interested to try that combo also.
I haven't. I was interested in trying it being that it looks fairly similar to the Dissector, which I've liked in the past. But I figured the Kryptotal RE would be better across a range of conditions. Eastern Canada can be a bit unpredictable with weather in the summer, so a full dry tire like that isn't always a good idea.
I've an Assegai on one of my bikes, but mostly I run Vee Snap WCE on the front as I've found the casing burlier and the grip better.
It's heavier (It is a DH tire after all) but I don't worry about that as I really only care about grip at the end of the day.
Both are great, but the dhf is lighter, rolls better and is faster to lean the bike for cornering.
I really like the Dhf. I run the 2.3 bc my rims are really narrow, like internal width of 23mm. The treads aren't super tall and it works so for me. I wish there was a super tacky exo+ in 2.3. that would be cool.
