Running WTB vigilantes front and rear, 2,6" 650B

Running them with a fast rolling, tough compund rear and high grip, light compund on the front.

Gives me very predictable grip both front and rear and the tread pattern works well in most condintions.

Do any folks have an opinion about the eThirteen LG1 moto or TRSr or any other eThirteen tires?

Front: Maxxis Minon DHF 26" x 2.35 dual ply

Rear: Maxxis Minon DHF 26" x 2.35 dual ply

when the rear is too worn I remove the wheel, I replace it the tire mounted on the front wheel, while on the front wheel I mount a new tire always maxxis

I'm was running Vee Flow Snap+ (2.6" and a proper 2.6" at that!) front and back on my hard-tail. Still have some of my best times on that setup. Currently on DHF and Spesh Slaughter in the rear for winter fun drift :D

Yes, the ethirteen A/Ts are an amazing front tire. I loved the 1st gen. The 2nd gen were ok, i think the 3rd gen is a lot more like the 1st gen. What I do remember is that they are slow rolling, maybe a plus compound in the back would help, but I’m pretty sure I would not want mopo front and rear, mopo in the rear will be too slow, too grippy, and too fast wearing. Otherwise I like them up front more than minions

My frustration with Maxxis is sometimes I think they are backwards with their casings and compounds. I’d really like a DD or DH disector in the rear, in their dual compound. I’d like an Exo+ casing minion dhr2 (or DHF) in max grip. But they seem to only do lighter casings in maxterra and heavier casings in maxxgrip. Many exo casings are available in dual compound, but exo alone isn’t always the best out back

Currently running a trsr MOPO front and a gen2 LG1 trsr rear. It’s slow rolling but I’m pleased with the grip. I was running MOPO front and rear but had a nasty puncture on the rear that sealant nor a plug could fix. Had to beef up the casing in the rear because their light casing tires don’t hold up. Waiting on my new WAO Unions to arrive so I can try out the Michelin Wild Enduros.

muddy wet rootty + rocky --> Conti Der Baron F/R.. I think Conti should make a DH version of Der Baron and Der Kaiser across the line (27/5 & 29er) though.. The Der Projekt version (folding) have outstanding grip but the csg is bouncy.. not as damped as it could be (and warps).. never used them in super fast tracks, better on technical steep slippery tracks. May be cushcore would help them..

Here's a thought: don't rotate your tires. I used to do this, too, but then I realized my front tires lasted 2-3 times longer than rear tires. Now I replace rear tires when they're worn, and typically my front tire looks fine.

As a bonus, this allows me to buy a harder compound/longer lasting rear tire. Right now I'm running a hard compound (Maxxis call it "dual compound") folding bead 2.5" DHF with a downhill casing in the rear, and it's a dream. Super stable in turns, durable in rocks, brakes good with its full center tread, but it rolls fast because it's not soft. The Maxxis part number is TB96800100.
I can understand that you don't like to turn the wheels, but I don't understand why you have to remove my comment, you don't know the places where I ride, how can you devine if my evaluation criterion is correct or wrong, it seems to me a consideration a your exaggerated, I don't want to argue, but you haven't asked me for another opinion

I used to run the same tires F/R, back in the day when there wasnt much difference in rubber compounds an casings but now I like to run Assegai 2.5 MaxTerra F and DHR 2.4 DC R, seems to be the best combo for me in SoCal. On a side note, just put some new WAO union wheels on, very nice!

I just got a set of the 2018 e13 LG1 Race tires. They were on deep clearance on backcountry, and I couldn't resist ordering a pair to keep for when my current tires wear out. I haven't mounted them yet, but they weigh ~1000g in the single ply, reinforced casing, which is average for a knobby 29er tire. The casing feels thicker and stiffer than Maxxis EXO casing. Interesting design as the center knobs are significantly shorter than the side knobs. Not quite like a semi-slick tire, because the center knobs are still large, and paired like a Minion, but much much shorter than the knobs of a Minion. They look like they should roll fast in a straight line but corner like crazy.

Tires I've tried f & r:

1. WTB Vigi's 29 x 2.3
2. Onza Ibex 29 x 2.25
3. e13 TRS 29 x 2.35

Most all around ones: Ibex
Provides best grip: e13 - this would've been my favorite HOWEVER, I tried the TRS SS and discovered/realized how much less rolling resistance that had. HAHA. Stuck to that combo ever since - TRS front, TRS SS rear.

For daily use on my XC bike where I'm giving up a little grip to go around in circles fast, presumable, I run Bontrager XR4 front and rear. 2.6 front, 2.4 reat, both Team Issue. I've also move run this combo on by Enduro bike but with the SE not XR. I just order a second XR5 2.6, and I'm going to try those for the next race ...whenever that might be.

Maxxis Minon DHF is the best all round/wet conditions tire that you can run both front and back.
Maxxis High Roller 2 is the best dry/desert conditions tire that you can run front and back.

To save money I like to rotate tires from the front to the back and put my new tires on the front.

Would love to hear you guys tell me how dumb/smart I am.
I do this for general "park riding" on the DH Bike and DJ. If I'm DH racing, i am going to put on a new rubber.

For the Trail bike i prefer two different tread patterns so this is not an option for me.

DHF packs with mud too easily, i quite despise it when it get's wet out. DHR2 sheds mud a bit better and still corners as a front extremely well. I'd take DHR2s as a F & R combo over DHF for a set it and forget it setup.

oof to the maxxterra. maybe as a rear, but not as a front.

We need all the DD tires to have maxxgripp or a ST option

Tried Schwalbe Magic Mary front and rear. That is AWESOME in downhill and enduroing, but it lacks a little efficiency if you want to preserve (a little...) your lungs in climbs.

I tried Maxxis HR2 front and rear (DH casing, ST) : that's a big NO for me. There is a whole range of angle where there is an evident lack of grip.

Tried Maxxis Griffin (DH casing, ST) F/R too : that's good. Lighter than Magic Mary's bikepark, a little less grip, a whole lot more efficiency.. Little lack of frontal grip when braking hard but on the whole it's great.

Verdict 2.5

Judge 2.4

Gnarly tires for any terrain, any conditions!

Assegai DH 2.5' with cushcore front and rear. From guiding up at Tyax to park laps in Whistler, works every time.
Tell me how you get your DH tires on without destroyin the tire bead Smile

Another one following the curved pitch with Michelin Wild Enduro with their front & rear combo. Front is da bomb, but rear tread can’t hold up for long on hard pack riding. These replaced Der Kaisers, which were awesome but prone to pinching on the back in ‘Protection’ guise...DH casings impossible to find, which is unfortunate.

Yup. Been running them for a while and absolutely love them. I found the Gen 1 better than Gen 2 (Gen 2 is good just a bit more slow rolling), but the new Gen 3 tires are the best. They moved back to a slightly rounder profile and the new Mopo soft compound is the grippiest front tire I've used here in the PNW. The center knobs are a bit more ramped too so they roll faster than Gen 1 or Gen 2, but the side knobs offer insane grip.

I run LG1 EN Race in the rear (slightly harder compound than Mopo, similar to Maxxis Maxx Terra). It's a double down style construction/casing but weights about 60-70g less than Maxxis DD.

I run TRS Race Mopo in the front. Casing is similar to an EXO+. I won't be going back to Maxxis any time soon.

I have got a magic Mary up front and a DHR2 out back on my 29er. it does all I need it to do on the wet and dry rocks, root and everything else here in HK.
Update - I just tried a Magic Mary upfront and as well out back (both orange compound). On the mellower trails with not much of a descent, i thought my rear brake was dragging. I could feel the bike slowing down due to the tyre drag. BUT when gravity can get a better hold on you, these tyres grip and come into their own. Will try using 23-25 psi and see how helps with the rolling resistance improves and what happens to the grip levels.

Still running the Marys front and rear. The rear, obviously rolls better with up to 4psi more than I would run a DHR2, though the grip is not really effected by the increase of pressure.

Don’t know why they got rid of the Griffin I thought that was a great tire but tires come & go with Maxxis just like the Larsen TT or the newest iteration the Race TT both gone now, luckily I got a Griffin &. Race TT in my collection of tires.

I've always wondered how a sized down motocross/supercross tire would do on an MTB. Seeing as how we generally always end up doing what moto has done long ago anyways I wonder how a sized down battlecross or MX33 would feel on an MTB. Moto has way more money and time in tire testing and development!

100% agreed. Aggressor Dual DD 2.5 is a notable exception. Very good rear tire.

Kenda's current tire lineup is actually very good, for anyone wondering AEC feels a lot like double down in your hand, and AGC is the same but with a bead insert. Still have the Maxxis issue where the tough casings only come in soft compounds. Maybe the reinforced Ebike ones would be good.

I bought a pair of those new Versus tires and I love them for here in southeast Idaho. My bike came with DHF and DHRIIs, so I had no complaints, but when the rear wore out I decided to try something different and I went with the Versus on impulse after reading a review somewhere. I've got no complaints so far and I've been on them for a month or two.
