3/11/2026 2:56am I do agree but I also like a removable battery so i can take it on my rack without being way over the weight limit - my insurance wont cover if the bike is overweight an the rack breaks.

3/11/2026 2:55am Where did Shimano hurt you? Or are you just that much into Avinox? Afaik you can set up Shimano motors with tools like Stunlocker or Emax without having to visit a dealer. At least that was possible with the e8000 until Shimano introduced some restrictions for unlocking support for higher speeds in the last firmware iterations. But I believe Shimano...

3/10/2026 2:16am Well there are plenty of options with warranty shipping from germany: https://4mybike.de/Shimano-Steps-EP8-DU-EP800-Mittelmotor-85Nm-250W-E-B… https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/neu-shimano-du-ep801-motor-drive…

3/10/2026 12:54am No problem. Like I said: you could always buy single shimano motors at least in Europe and idk why that shouldn't be possible elsewhere. https://www.ebay.de/itm/297598934300?var=0&toolid=20006&customid=p6J02g…

3/9/2026 2:24pm At least in Europe there were always motors available to buy on the open market. It's also important to note that at least for the e8000 you could use the motor in the bike without having to go to a dealer. With specialized for example you can run into trouble if you buy a motor or just a mastermind display...

3/9/2026 6:57am Had nowhere close to the Brose failure rate and apart from the rattle it is a decent motor that allowed for comparatively slim/light builds when it came out. The Orbea rise became a hit because of it. Bosch would have been too heavy as a system as they only allow their own batteries to be specced.

3/9/2026 2:28am To be fair again: the reliability issues weren't as bad as the brose. Plus while there were no spare parts available the motors itself were always available for sale at a rather low price. You can buy them new for 180€: https://www.bike-discount.de/de/shimano-steps-ep6-du-ep600-mittelmotor-… Plus the motor mount from e8000 to ep801 is the same. Which means bikes from 10 years ago...

3/8/2026 12:01pm Because of the power wars shimano gets often treated unfairly in the court of public opinion. In reality their motors were at the forefront in terms of overall system weight, having a small form factor and providing natural support when they came out. They just fumbled it with the batteries and the rattle and since then have been behind the...

3/7/2026 12:02pm The Albert Trail Pro casing seems to be too weak for enduro stuff. At least for me with full power ebike, lighter rider and I'm not that fast and don't ride gnarly trails with sharp rocks. So probably won't work for heavier/faster riders and/or low pressure. The Magic Mary Trail Pro seems to have more meat and could work for...

3/6/2026 2:02am I'm not only talking about weight but the knob height in the sense that on more hard packed trails or rocks tall knobs fold and give you that drifting/unprecise feeling. I notice it with the magic mary and assume it's worse with the shreddas.

3/5/2026 8:17am I didn't try the shreddas but to me they seem to be a bit overkill, even on an ebike. Like almost 1,6 kg for a tire. Maybe on very loose/muddy terrain they might make sense but in the summer? That Dario diGuglio guy from pinkbike seems to cut a shreddar down. I think he even moutned the rear version in...

3/3/2026 2:53am Yeah, the e8000 was easy to tune with the official app and unofficial ones like stunlocker and emax as it was relatively undongled. I think you could even up the torque to 75nm or unlimited speed if I'm not mistaken. But the newest firmware iterations restricted it a bit.

3/3/2026 2:50am I love my Santa Cruz Bullit ebike, but under California law, specialized is now making mopeds, not ebikes. I agree with Hans. It's disappoint to see Specialized disregard existing ebike laws and try to compete with DJI for the highest power boomer scooter. 750w is a reasonable limit for ebikes. Let's let ebike be ebikes, not mopeds or emotos.

3/3/2026 2:48am Its funny how everyone told me I'm wrong to ride 3 spacers in my 36 as I'm light and not a heavy hitter but I always liked the support it gave me.

3/2/2026 12:30pm from Hans Rey about ebike development Link: https://hansrey.com/blog/ An Open Letter to the Bicycle Industry By Hans Rey To the leaders, builders, advocates, and riders who shape our industry, I’m writing because I care deeply about where bicycles—and electric bicycles—are headed. We are at a crossroads. The decisions we make about language, power limits, and definitions will determine whether Class 1 e-bikes remain accepted as bicycles—or get grouped with much more powerful machines that don’t belong in the same category. It’s time to define our language and it’s time to draw a line in the sand of when e-bikes become...

3/2/2026 6:08am Yeah, the turbo power wars have totally distorted the percieved range of ebikes. Its kinda not gnarly because you're still get a decent amount of support compared to an acoustic bike.

3/2/2026 3:15am It was during covid lockdown before I had the ability to charge with my camper van and campsites were closed. So I had to stretch the battery over a weekend and regulated the motor down to Eco 25 or 20 for the most part (can't remember exactly). So it was on light emtb level assistance and I'm a light rider.

2/28/2026 3:18am I feel like the additional weight is kinda like damping. As in in it will make a bike even with entry level dampers feel more calm. But there is also a downside the heavier a bike gets: it tends to feel too planted/dead or hard to get off the ground. A heavier bike will also push you more when you...

2/27/2026 8:13am Yeah that's not what a quickly removable battery means. I'm talking about taking it out in seconds.

2/27/2026 5:06am I could do 2500m of climbing with my e8000 504wh battery. I would never want to carry a battery or a charger in a backpack. I couldn't find a instruction for the Crestline dji battery removal but the bosch version doesn't look like it's that quick: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rOULgMhgebI&pp=ygUdQ3Jlc3RsaW5lIGRqaSBiYX… The principle is similar to the Gen 3 levo but with that you...
