synBike Added a reply to MTB Tech Rumors and Innovation
1/23/2024 3:19pm Don't open this can of worms again . Someone got in in their head that a 6 bar linkage bike is only a "real" 6 bar if the wheel and not the shock is attached to the follower links.

1/18/2024 8:22pm The linkage itself is VERY sensitive to adjustments. They could be using a set of different upper links with a few different progression ranges. Alternatively they might have some chip inserts for that same link. I say that link specifically because the point where the dogbone connects has a big influence on the progression AND you can't see the side...

synBike Added a reply to Frame design: how to select shock stroke & length?
1/12/2024 8:01am I wouldn't read much into the Orange comments. They could have done a million things with leverage ratio that gave it a "more planted" feel. That would not have been due to the shock change alone. From past experience in the industry these types of comments often get misinterpreted. Bigger shocks are nicer because they have more oil volume and...
synBike Added a reply to DIY mtb telemetry system
12/20/2023 8:38am @happymeal Taking derivatives generally amplifies any noise in the signal. There are various methods to reduce this but they may not work well at high frequencies. Numerical integrals on the other hand generally stabilise the signal BUT they accumulate errors over time (drift). This is why devices that need to do dead-reckoning rely on correlating different types of sensors over...
synBike Added a reply to Kinematics
11/13/2023 3:50pm Some comments: The antisquat vs pedal kickback conversation is always interesting because I think some things get muddled when people assume that one depends on the other. The two are completely independent calculations that depend on some of the same input variables. In practice this means when you tune one the other is inevitably changed. However there are thought experiments...

synBike Added a reply to Softer shock = Loss of front end grip
7/29/2023 5:56am This is exactly what happens. When the shock is sitting too deep the front gets unloaded and you can't maintain enough weight on the front tire contact patch to engage corners properly. You can fake it a bit with body position but in the end you will always be fighting the shock. A ballpark estimate is for every 9kg of body...

7/14/2023 2:08pm It's called syn ( syn.bike), made (presumably) by @synDev! Not sure what you mean about being unable to see the photo in Linkage, though:

7/14/2023 2:07pm I think you can basically make no assumptions about what the kinematics look like. Similar to most 6 bar bike there is a lot of flexibility and sensitivity to the arrangement. I would guess they want more control over packaging compared to a Range layout (where you are heavily constrained by the linkarm concentric to the BB ). The trade...
synBike Added a comment about press release TranzX Announces New $499 Wireless Dropper Post
5/25/2023 7:42am No. In general communication protocols typically send messages in chunks (streaming). The chunks are then combined and a unique identified for that message is checked. Basically there is a mathematical process where a long message can be converted to a short unique signature (a hash). If the hashes match then it the receiver knows the whole message has been received and it is valid. If junk data gets in the mix it invalidates the hash and the receiver knows the result is invalid The bluetooth protocol itself also includes a whole bunch of handshake protocols for devices to identify themselves...

synBike Added a reply to Full suspension recos for 4 year old
1/17/2023 7:33am The only options that come to mind for a 20" are the Commencal or the Norco Fluid 20. https://www.norco.com/bikes/youth/youth-trail/fluid-fs-youth/2021-fluid… FWIW the Norco kinematics have a much higher starting leverage than an adult bike would to keep the shock moving effectively. The manitou fork is ok but I have always felt it was the forks that held back tiny FS bikes.

10/30/2022 7:52pm Perhaps a bad reference image. Knolly/Specialized are using a Watt 2. The new Commencal DH is interesting because it is one of the few where the wheel is attached to links 5/6 rather than 2/3/4. In the end doesn't really make a big difference but it can give you some nice separation of antisquat properties and a little bit more...

10/30/2022 10:05am Not to put a damper (pun intended) on anyone's engineering snobbery but at least in North America a 4+2 configuration is still considered a 6 bar linkage. Watt 1 and Stephensen 1 are the typical 6 bars you see used on bikes. Most fully constrained 6 bar linkages include a closed loop 4 bar linkage but those two specifically have...

1/6/2022 12:30pm With a locked rear wheel you are correct there would be no wheel wind from the axle path and essentially no pedal kickback on a URT (relevant for certain scenarios). On a URT you could look at wheel wind either by fixing the frame or the bb horizontally (and allowed to slide vertically). With the frame fixed you get some...

1/6/2022 11:45am You still get pedal kickback from the wheel wind up. A bunch of different terms in calculating pedal kickback some with more real-world relevance than others but if you picture the BB on the frame constrained to a vertical slider and compressing the suspension the wheel will move backwards with respect to the bike (rearward axle path) and that will...

1/6/2022 7:59am This was too good not to share. We might have the holy grail of suspension design here
Extremely digressive (more than -100% progressive) Low anti squat High anti rise A surprising amount of pedal kickback for a URT (likely due to the rearward axle path winding up the chain) Going to give it a solid 3 bananas out of...

3/21/2021 7:22am I remember seeing that when I looked around for something similar. Looking again is a good reminder to put some fork axle to crown reference lengths in the info hover text.
synBike Started a new thread Geometry Analysis Tool
3/20/2021 3:46pm I thought I would share a little geo analysis tool I made as a side project while testing out some new web tools. It lets you see how all the little cockpit mods, wheel size changes, and fork swaps will impact your bike geo and fit. You can also create a few bikes to compare side by side. Great for...
