5/16/2025 11:10am people use belt-driven bikes for winter commuting in north-eastern north america (i.e. in much colder conditions, with slush and snow and ice and salt). belts seem to work just fine in those conditions. sounds to me like they're just looking for an excuse people will buy.

slyfink Added a reply to The Risk of Riding Mountain Bikes
11/26/2024 1:37pm I've been riding mountain bikes since 1992 (over 30 years! 😬). In 2021 I managed to crush two vertebra going OTB at MSA. I'm back to riding now because I got lucky and didn't damage my spinal cord. I have three observations: 1. there are way more "flow trails" and purpose built trails now than ever before. these scare me...

11/26/2024 1:16pm so I read through the actual published study (link here for anyone interested: https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/neur.2024.0103 ). As someone who works in a medicine adjacent field that is also a experienced cyclist, I found one surprising omission in the study - that there was no data on the experience level of those who experienced spinal injuries (especially given the inclusion of other population data - gender, age, marital status, employment). I get it from a medical perspective (an injury is an injury), but from a cycling perspective I think it would be beneficial to understand whether or not the injuries are occurring...

11/26/2024 1:05pm I haven’t been able to dig into the article, yet. I’d be curious if it includes a meta analysis that might detect trends in the factors around the incidents. Types of trails, experience level of riders, type of protection in use or not present, etc.. If we are going to try to mitigate risks, it would be helpful to understand factors that might increase or decrease it.

4/5/2022 12:10pm I know this is an old post... (I was looking for some real-world reviews of these wheels to buy used), but if you think of your tires as an air spring, the larger volume tires (the wider ones) will be more linear when they compress, and the lower volume tires (narrower) will ramp up more quickly. So when you hit an object, a low volume tire will be more resistant to bottoming out. Add to that the fact that as you corner hard, you are "preloading" the rear tire (spring) more, it needs to be more supportive. But your sweet...

7/21/2021 8:27am won't a 27.5 tube fit in a 29 tire? The biggest downside I can think of in terms of "spare parts" is not being able to swap your front tire to the back when the back tire wears out. I can't think of other spare parts that swap between front and rear wheels...

7/16/2021 5:22am "upvote/downvote count affects sort order" Please never. Just adds to the mob / popularity rule that ruins all social media. Why bother to sift through the bottom 90 of 100 comments (On Vital? That might not be the record but it would be close.), there not "popular".

slyfink Added a comment about feature What's In, What's Out - Mountain Biking in 2020
1/6/2020 1:37pm On the topic of underbiking... no question they're great fun. but as a daily driver, the mismatched intent will lead to breakage sooner rather than later. As a result, you'll be punishing your buds who have "overbiked" in the name durability, as they'll have to wait around for you while you fix your shit, or will have to tow you out. But you'll sure look "core" in the parking lot when you let onlookers know that you're better than everyone else, which is why you can ride a shorter travel bike...

10/9/2019 1:08pm I had an IXS Trail RS. I really liked that helmet because of price, fit, look, and colour. But a crash led it to early retirement. Since then, I've not bothered with helmets that don't have a slip plane/concussion reduction system of some sort. I'd get another one of these in a heart beat if they offered it with that technology. There's just too many helmets offered with it, at competitive prices, to pass it up.

9/3/2019 12:41pm I'm also go out on a limb and claim a few things: - narrower rim = lighter. - narrower rim also allows you to run narrower tires, which also = lighter. - wider tires = higher volume. if you think of tires as suspension, higher volume equals more linear spring rate; ergo narrower tire = more ramp up (similar to adding tokens to your air spring). [Higher volume only = more grip at slower speeds.]

9/3/2019 12:36pm I believe DH bikes are generally much shorter in reach and TT length than enduro bikes. in part because they don't need to pedal for long distances. geometry is optimised for one direction (down) rather than up, down, and all around.

Thanks for the content... two comments about format: 1) me personally, I'm not a big fan of video for this type of content. I can't quickly scan through to see what inerests me or not, and I'm not keen to open a video on my phone when not on wifi. 2) might be connected to point 1), but it could be helpful to post links to the products? took me a while to find the makers of the rockband... 2)b. I like the miniratchet toolkit. I used to have the Topeak version, and have been bummed since I lost in...

slyfink Added a comment about press release FOX Racing Announces All-New Flux and Flux Mips Trail Helmet
2/9/2018 11:47am I like the look of this helmet. It's high on the list of possible replacements for this coming season. One thing I have not seen mentionned, and is not listed on their site, is go-pro mounting options? I'm not interested in mounting a camera, but rather a light... any info on that?
