bturman Liked a product review First Ride: SRAM's New Code RSC Brakes
6/7/2017 1:24am
Travel back in time to the 2006 World Cup season and you'll see matte army green prototype Avid Code disc brakes mounted to select Pro downhill bikes, ready for testing. The brakes looked wild at the time, boasting huge calipers and large bearings in the lever that we'd never seen before. As the years rolled on Codes became a staple in the downhill world as a reliable, powerful workhorse ready to slow you down in a hurry with their strong bite. Fast-forward to early 2017 and they were among the few remaining Avid products – a testament to how well...

jeff.brines Liked a product review First Look, First Ride: The All-New 2018 Santa Cruz Nomad
6/2/2017 10:05am
Defining the new Nomad left me scratching my head for words. Most everything I wrote sounded like a cliché directly from the 2009 Handbook for Mountain Bike Journalists. "A trail bike that descends like a downhill bike." "A mini-DH bike that can pedal." Yeah, they've both been used ad-nauseam... The ultimate irony to my cliché-laden articulation strugglefest is that the new Nomad is anything but cliché. At a time when most companies seem to be chasing the perfect mid-travel trail bike or eeking every millisecond out of an enduro race bike, Santa Cruz’s latest Nomad iteration seems to be built...

dirtworks911 Liked a product review RockShox Reverb 1X Remote
5/31/2017 12:39am
After riding the Reverb by RockShox for five years, I was always pretty impressed with it’s overall performance. When working right, the Reverb is a hard post to beat in smoothness and adjustability. On the other hand, there’s no secret that the Reverb had it’s fair share of technical problems. Luckily, most if not all of these problems have been solved with their latest version (the B1). Just when I felt the Reverb couldn’t get any better RockShox introduced a new shifter-style lever named the X1. Being satisfied with my B1 Reverb already, I doubted even opting for the $95...

bturman Liked a product review Review - 2017 Yeti SB5 Carbon from Vital MTB Test Sessions
5/29/2017 1:07am
Back in 2014, Vital MTB awarded Yeti Cycles with the coveted Bike of the Year Shreddy Award for the SB5 Carbon, noting how incredibly capable and efficient the short-travel steed felt on trail. Fast forward to 2017 and Yeti has revised the SB5 with tweaked geometry, updated standards, an exclusive shock configuration, a much more pleasing aesthetic, and a host of fresh components that bring it up to date with the latest and greatest trail bikes. Curious to see just how much the changes improved the ride, we shifted into overdrive on Tucson, Arizona's notoriously rowdy Mount Lemmon trails while...

bturman Liked a product review Review - 2017 Transition Scout Carbon from Vital MTB Test Sessio
5/24/2017 1:37pm
Subscribing to long, low, and slack frame geometry, Bellingham-based Transition Bicycles designed the Scout to be a ripping 27.5-inch mid-travel trail bike. New for 2017, the frame is available in carbon. Built to ride down the mountain like a slopestyle bike with a little cushion, the lightweight package is also ready to pedal big miles getting up the next. Tucson, Arizona's wild mix of trails served as an excellent place for our female shredders to try it out during the 2017 Vital MTB Test Sessions. Highlights Carbon frame 27.5-inch wheels 125mm (4.9-inches) of rear wheel travel // 140mm (5.5-inches) fork...
