This whole pre practice practice purity-of-racing kerfuffle; who cares? 1) As far as I know you are never practicing the exact track. 2) This isn't enduro where 'ride off your wits" is part of the aim. Its DH, with ample practice awarded to everyone in every class. 3) Don't a lot of these tracks have sections that are always part of a bike park or similar? (Fort Bill) 4) My biggest point - you could give the top guys unlimted practice for weeks prior to the race and I'd bet it changes nothing. A track is learned relatively quickly. From...

Man...thought for sure you'd just get out a post it note & write me an offer, flip it face down...and slide it across the table. I'd pick it up at the edge to peak at the number, realize it's a post it note, try to get it off my finger...and wind up letting everyone over my shoulder see the offer. Suspense ruined!

What I find intriguing again is another Specialized gravity rider running Maxxis Minions. Note the DHFs on the front of both Bruni and Finn's bikes. Graves was also running a minion.

A lot of riders say that just about all top of the line DH bikes out there are great (and the pros aren't allowed to mention favorites) but we all know some bikes just have that fire that makes you go all out. The only bike that we definitely know was objectively better than the rest at the time was...

I can completely relate to that feeling from the other side of the spectrum. It's real reason I found the best DH bike I have had (an M9) just not that fun and sometimes down right dangerous to ride. You'd feel so in-control that you'd have to push that much harder to get that exciting rush. It also means that, unless you have insanely good downhill trails in your back ground, all your rides are quite unexciting. It's also why one of my favorite bikes of all time was a Yeti 575. Fun and exciting but trail bikes back then...

Jeff, your last comment was right. sort of. I'm glad Enve has taken a step in that direction but I am hoping for some manufacturers to push further. I'd just like to add a little to this discussion being on the heavy side (200lbs) and a downhiller who is hard on wheels. What I'm really liking about this whole prospect of really nice rims with inserts is that, for the first time, we might have a system where a rim can be a "permanent" component on a bike. It may be hard to really quantify an aluminum vs carbon rim...

OT: I wish I could get a review from you based on that decision! That's exactly what I want to do, downsize travel for more fun. The Scout looks like a perfect XC bike for downhillers.

How long did it take? Did you put on a layer of clear coat after? Any plans to do the lowers too? How rare do you prefer your steak?

Stans Flows are in exactly the same niche as these. They're also about the same weight. My observations was that in the past the carbon rim wave was being marketed as way more stiff, 100g-ish lighter, and more durable. We all know carbon rims being more durable than alu rims is bullshit. I'm convinced they really are stiffer. I'm no weight weenie (42lb bike), but lighter rims make a massive difference in bike handling and how light a bike pedals. If stiffer wheels was the icing on the cake, then lighter weight (at no penalty) is the actual cake that would...
