Fresh podcast went up yesterday! We chatted with Jason Richardson, ex-pro BMX racer who has been a sports p sychologists the past 10+ years working with a lot of top cycling athletes. We actually recorded this a month ago, so I'm excited to listen to it again as we covered so many interesting topics about how to change your mindset and set yourself up to produce the outcome you're looking for—whether that is in a racing environment or just life in general. Enjoy!

Thank you for having me on the show! And slight, but important correction… I am a Psychologist 😬 ✌🏾👊🏾

Why this thread exists The Bikeconomics megathread keeps getting derailed by DJI/Avinox/Amflow chatter so I'm spinning it off. Goal here is one place to talk about the DJI ecosystem, where it's headed, and what it means for the rest of the industry. Business, technology, regulatory, and the inevitable trail access tangents are all fair game. Try and keep the broader...

Any thoughts on creating a new thread with to sole focus being DJI/Avinox/Amflow + Future (which can be technology and business)? I know a number of you subscribe to this looking for a broader range of things to be talked about. I'm happy to start one if you guys want.

I'll just say this (for now); off the record I've heard from many sources both Bosch and DJI are exploring gear box alternatives. DJI (Avinox) all but said it on the record. If I were a betting man I'd bet Sea Otter 2027 is focused around this one topic.

I got ~30 minutes each with Avinox and Bosch and am still figuring out what to do with the content (podcast or writing). Unsurprisingly, Bosch is a bit "disappointed" (I'm paraphrasing) in the direction Avinox is pushing the industry. They leaned heavily into trail access and stewardship, and suggested the current crop of high-output motors doesn't jive with the effort...

I agree with both points (mandatory licensing with training classes and banning "in-between" mobility devices), and I think your arguments are well-reasoned and practical. However, I have zero confidence that your wonderful and simple solutions will be will implemented, and instead I predict an insane hodgepodge of jurisdictions, conflicting standards, and varying degrees of enforcement.

I'm a fan of most of these policies. My only disagreement is over the mandatory online training courses, because mandatory online training courses have never taught anyone anything in the history of the world. But the rest of the rules make a lot of sense. This e-bike/motorcycle/scooter/vespa space has been the absolute wild west, and has been steadily marching toward regulatory oversight for a while. It will be interesting to see how these regulations continue to play out. For instance, New Jersey's recent e-bike regulations to the effect that "everything with a battery needs to be licensed and insured like...

In the US E-bike regulation is basically voluntary on behalf of the companies, right? IE the Class 1, 2, 3 thing is just a “gentleman’s agreement” and not something that is actually mandatory for companies to follow?

Fair question. You probably could use the raw model on its own, but what I’m trying to build is more the structure around it. For suspension tuning, the hard part usually isn’t just getting an answer, it’s getting consistent input, keeping the bike/setup context, and narrowing things down to one clear next change instead of a broad conversation that can drift around. So the app is really meant to make that process more repeatable between rides, not just wrap a model for the sake of it. Still early though.

I hear you. I spend a lot of time building applications and keep getting reminded of "The Bitter Lesson," so I might be a touch jaded here. My take: a large context SOTA model with tool calling (web search + code sandbox) in a simple chat interface will probably outperform a purpose-built web app, unless you've got something heavily quantitative...

@jeff.brines In terms of a higher level industry question, I'd love to know if (off the record), US and European bike brands view themselves as under threat by Chinese brands like Amflow and that other company whose name slips me showing off proto frames, suspension, and brakes. The vertical integration threat seems real in this thread but I wonder if the brands see it yet.

Yet another DJI / Avinox / Amflow update (and correction) live from Sea Otter. When I asked about the relationship between DJI, Avinox, and Amflow, I was told they are entirely separate from one another. DJI incubated the motor program and then spun it off, branding it as Avinox. Amflow started as a proof of concept and was also spun...

Rather than specific questions I think an off the record assessment of if the overall business is better, worse or the same as 2025 would be interesting. I suspect it's on no-ones interest to say it's worse though. Is there any development happening for normal, not 32" bikes? Or are the current roll outs the end of the line if it's not electric?
