Wow, that is a pretty harsh but well reasoned review. Credit to the Loam Wolf for trying to investigate and resolve the issues and giving an honest report of the facts, without the sugar coating that you sometimes see with publications trying to keep their advertisers happy.

Thanks for the test, although I strongly disagree with the fact that the XTR offer "Light lever feel with a gradual build in power = excellent braking control and modulation". Actually, it's the opposite in my experience. The XTR are quite on/off brakes (not as much as the Saint, but still). Actually, they offer far less modulation than the MT7, which I've been using for several years on different bikes. Also, your test does not touch base on the reliability of those systems. Even though I'm a big Magura fan, I could not stand the recurring and unpredictable losses of...

Lot of time and effort to test and report here. Thank you. Much to take in. Pursuing all the data and sharing is fantastic. I’m by no means in the know regarding current equipment or brake trends, but not testing A4 or Saints gives an impression of biasing the overall test away from Hayes and Shimano. Just my potentially out of touch impression.

If I were in for new brakes, and based on using a selection of SRAM, Shimano, and Hope over the years, it would either be SLX on a budget/trail, or Hope V4 for DH/ebike. Would be interesting to see how they stack up against these, or if anyone thinks there are better options for these uses?

how can the lever feel score be so high on sram brakes? genuine question, i'd give them a 5/10 max just because the shape is nice

Some real strange testing protocols, the main one being testing Hayes with semi-metallic, Shimano with resin and the rest with metallic. You'd think you'd go through all that trouble of using Brake-Ace to draw measurable comparisons you'd at the least run the same ballpark compound (Hayes even includes metallic pads in the box, Shimano metallic pads are easily had). Ideally you'd have just gotten a pair Galfer/Sinter/MTX pads for all brakes where possible. Not sure how the Hayes brakes gets a 7 for bleed procedure. It has literally the same bleed procedure as SRAM (to the point where I use...

As an owner of a V2 Sentinel and Spire, they have become my favorite riding frames. Their geometry is just dialed, plenty of anti squat, plenty of climbing traction. And when you point them down, super stable at speed, not twitchy.

This is an actual PR that I read all the way through! A fascinating read and really insightful. This is how small brands get customers. She ain't a looker, but damn, do I want to try one now(I don't like/want ebikes).

Really glad that Cy shares his full development process. I love all the benefits of this over the cleaner looking integration that is heavier. I do also love what Lapierre has done with using an external swapable battery for weight distribution and ride feel. This should be more important than looks.

Beautiful work as always! Looks like you can fit as many water bottles as you want in that thing. Maybe I missed it but is this a steel frame? Seems light enough to be Ti so wasn’t sure

I checked for you, it's 11.2kg without pedals. With XTR 970s it's 11.6 I think it could get close to 10kg with some lighter wheels, shorter dropper, Garbaruk cassette and another crankset, but I just like all these parts to much to care about that. ;-) I prefer functional and durable over silly weightweenie stuff.

Jbirddawg I laughed at your caption “scary how far weve come!” Only because the bike still kind of looks similiar to a current Gen Orange 22 years later haha. But this was a treat to see. Thanks for posting it! Good look on the restore. I wish I had something like this to put in my home on display.
