6/15/2025 10:39pm A lot of good thoughts here, but just to play devil's advocate, have we considered the possibility that he's right and we're all stupid and everyone in the bike industry has collectively been doing it wrong for 30-40 years and he alone can tell us the answer and it requires buying this expensive new product from his webstore? I mean at least consider it, is what I'm saying.

6/8/2024 8:00am Racing isnt about fair, racing is about being the fastest without breaking any rules, as with so many other sports. should top riders not be allowed to use prototype tires with proprietary rubber compounds? that happens in every cycling discipline at basically every uci race. Also, this is an advantage if used well, but not necessarily automatic speed.

4/24/2024 12:26pm Always funny when pro athletes describe their aluminum frame as a performance advantage. They need to get in touch with the marketing dept so they can discover what they're feeling is wrong.

1/30/2024 11:33am The SuperBoost. If you have companies who can make 148 mm rears on DH bikes, you can make your enduro bikes with 148 too. The Millyard bike had a narrow rear end for a reason. It's nice to have wheels that can go on any bike. Feels a bit like 1996.

1/30/2024 11:32am SO HARD TO PICK Headset cable routing dies forever. Passing a law that all stems and handlebars have to be two-piece on new bikes (you can buy your stupid one-piece bar/stem combos aftermarket if you want them so bad). All mountain bikes run a 73mm BSA BB. Downhill bike engineers, see next bulletpoint if you're worried about chainlines. One front and rear axle standard for all mountain bikes. It could be 15x110 and 12x148 and it would be amazing. It's easy to build downhill forks with too much torsional stiffness (see: OG Fox 40), so you don't really need a...

11/25/2023 8:13am Thats cool! I've been working on measuring & collecting tyre data, and testing what I can to see the differences in casing, compound and age. Going to take a while to get enough useful data think its and area that is woefully underestimated at the moment, so will be interested to see what you find!

11/25/2023 8:11am Conti is doing some really interesting things with their compounds and constructions. They use a much firmer compound as a very thin top layer that covers the ooey-gooey compound inside. Getting good deformation from the soft compound interior but increased durability from that outer layer.

11/25/2023 8:11am Sounds like an interesting senior project! I've always wondered about tire spring rates, especially whether a tire's spring rate is measurably progressive, like an air spring in a fork, or if it's practically perfectly linear because it's such a small displacement into such a large overall volume. I've also wondered how massive tire inserts like Cushcore change the spring rate or progressiveness of tires as they take up so much volume. Would love to see your final work when it's done. Something interesting about the Continental tires is that they use 120tpi casings instead of 60tpi, which is very unusual...

11/14/2023 9:35am Right now I'm doing my senior mechanical engineering project on a subject related to this. I'm measuring a tire's effective spring rate and seeing how it changes with tire construction, with the goal of using it as a tuning parameter in addition to internal pressure. Obviously this is for the pointy end of the spear in terms of rider skill...

10/9/2014 8:09am Hardly offended by another Joey from Brooklyn who 1) cant read and 2) thinks Plattekill is the end-all, be-all of hardcore DH. If I ever decide to trade Schladming for Splatakill, I will be sure to let you know.

10/9/2014 8:09am You always seem to follow every comment with "but it would be destroyed at Plattekill". Get real. Having grown up in Upstate NY, ridden at Plattekill, Bromont QB, all over Vermont and spending the last 4 years riding World Cup tracks in Central Europe, Plattekill is not even remotely the most gnarly mountain that has ever existed. This bike has been raced at World Cup race pace on tracks that put Plattekill to shame and it has survived completely intact. Find a new argument.
