Fort William is back hosting the DH World Champs for the first time since 2007 - here's a great place to share your IG nuggets and chat with your fellow MTBers about the single most important race of the year. Take a first look at the refreshed and upgraded course to start things off:
I'm a bit split on if the changes to the upper part of the track are good/needed. If I were showing up to race, I would be stoked that they added a few berms and smoothed out some sections. As a DH enthusiast and self-proclaimed purist, I hope it doesn't sanitize the racing in the upper part of the track. I'm sure a lot of the fresh bits will get chewed up, and it'll still be as brutal as ever. But just my two cents. The changes in course layout are sweet though since Fort Bill has been the same for so long! Godspeed to everyone's wheels this week lol
Curious how there isn't semi-finals in this one! I was wondering what was going to happen!
world champs format is different than world cup.
i know schedule says qualifying, but can anyone confirm if it's just seeding? i didn't think worlds had qualifying that could prevent someone from racing finals.

Pretty sure you're right. I believe all that are entered get to race.

thanks @sevenz. kind of a bummer. it wasn't always like that IIRC and w/ a limited field size, seems like every rider should get a run at finals just for worlds.
Do you know if this has changed recently? I also didn't think qualifying was a thing at Worlds.
Not sure as I always thought all that made it to worlds raced...I only looked it up as our friend Kale (Female Junior racing worlds) said she needed to qualify.
here's another POV of the track via youtube (not tiny, no-control-havin', no-fullscreening Instagram : ) and yes, on an ebike

Looks interesting ! Top has been a bit manicured but as often, it will probably be as destroyed as before within hours of training.
I really like the change in the woods before the gap, looks like there could be few lines to choose from. In the end, Fort Bill has never been known for being a lines' "buffet", so it's not better or worse than previously I guess
looking back, 2020, 2021 and 2022 were narrowed down to 80 men for final. i haven't dug further yet.
edit, 2018 and 2019, also narrowed to...

I remember when it changed some years back and was a bit bummed. I always thought it was pretty cool that people from all over could get selected by there federation and have a crack at the big stage. I'm sure logistically its far easier culling the field down for finals though.
Here's a more useful link. Good news is those of us with GCN+ should be able to watch. Anyway, based on the Eurosport description of what downhill racing is, I'm pretty pumped.
"Fancy hurling yourself down mountain pistes at insane speeds, flying off ramps, navigating twisty turns and avoiding obstacles? Then the downhill, undoubtedly MTB's most thrilling event, might be for you Riders make death-defying charges down steep courses one by one in a race against the clock. Fastest wins!"
They also describe the XC race as being 100km long.

GCN+ won't work for you if you're based in the US - or in any of the countries listed above where there is a TV rights holder i imagine. It will Probably work if you're based in say AzerbaijaN though

I think it’s a sports website that also may try to sell you insurance.

Haha, there are times when I've gone down the UCI website rabbit hole only to wonder later how I found some info that seemed important. Their website is a nightmare to navigate at times!

My experience with tiz is patchy. Sometimes I can't get it to load at all. I was stoked to be watching the Lenzerheide men's finals for free when the stream stopped (at the request of Discovery apparently) with 3 riders to go. They did have the full replay up the next day though.
The news I'm really waiting for is whether anyone at the BBC had the good sense to take Warner up on his offer to commentate for free. Probably too much to ask though.
We’re conducting a survey and would appreciate your input. Your answers will help Vital and the MTB industry better understand what riders like you want. Survey results will be used to recognize top brands. Make your voice heard!
Five lucky people will be selected at random to win a Vital MTB t-shirt.
Here's the outline schedule (all times in UK time):
Come on Rachel!

The fresh cut section just above the road gap looks great.
