i was sent the following email, so figured i'd post it up here...such a bummer and hopefully things can get squared away safely and quickly.

Some information on a story here in Queenstown, New Zealand that I thought might be of interest (I haven’t seen a report on it yet on any of the cycling websites)

The short of it is the Queenstown Bike Park is closed indefinitely due to flooding on the evening of the 21st of September, during the installation of the new $150 million dollar gondola over the past 3 years the land owners of the Queenstown Lakes District Council who lease the land to Skyline Enterprises LTD did not clear the remaining slash from the tree felling. The rain on the 21st caused a large slip that destroyed the return track back to the bike park and flattened the town's cemetery right beside the bottom terminal.

The 23/24 Queenstown Gondola season was also meant to start the day of the slip, during the summer season it is widely used by the who’s who of downhill and enduro for pre-season testing and training.

Looks like clear cutting on a super steep slope at the base of a mountain was a bad idea?

What are you on about ya sausage!
They just sent out an email saying they’re clearing up the logs but for now they’ll use a different exit. Should be back open this month.

Here's a 🪞 for your thoughts. Imagine thinking a land slip is related to some climate agenda instead of direct ground works going on in the area... yep.. that's the literal definition of dead in the head 🤦‍♂️🤔😂😂

Slash from tree felling has been causing problems all around NZ for years. When are they going to learn to clean that shit up?

New regulations regarding slash have just been introduced - everything 2m or longer with a 10cm diameter or moe has to be removed unless too unsafe to do so.

They've been introduced in part due to the flooding we had earlier in the year in the Hawkes Bay.

Good to hear. I was out there (fortunately on the South Island) when the floods hit around Gisborne, what a mess.
