At a race (I think it was a Crankworks event) his tire went around the timer starting wand and he didn't end up hitting the timer until his foot made contact with it. It caused a kerfuffle. Did he intentionally steer around it? Is the wand ceremonial (and they actually rely on timing lasers/some other system) or does it start the timer? Did Thomas Slavik intentionally steer around it when it happened at a Cerro Abajo event? People were pretty quick to label him a cheater and he seemed to drop off the radar a bit afterwards. Gilchrist at one of the Crankworks stops last year snuck his front wheel around the start wand so his leg was what first hit it, meaning his time started when he was already halfway down the ramp. It's unclear if it actually made a difference because in some of those races, the wand is the backup, and the actual timing is done by a beam break on the start ramp.

Ease of use and less SKUs. An air shock or fork adapts to everything from an XS to an XL rider with a shock pump by the average user. Changing coils is more involved, requires a workshop for the fork at least, different sizes come with different springs so you have 4 or 5 SKUs. And it's heavier. And more expensive as you have to buy another spring. Air is free.
