Simann Liked a reply to forum topic 170mm 36 vs 38 fork: which would you prefer?

I've had all 4 forks; Lyrik Ult 160, 36 Fact 160, Zeb Ult 170 and 38 Fact 170. I'm 220 lbs kitted up, and the torsional stiffness of the 38 and Zeb chassis is definitely noticeable but with a significant weight penalty. An extra pound and some change up front certainly is palpable on mellow undulating trails. I prefer the smaller Lyrik and 36 on my trail bikes and the Zeb and 38 on my Enduro. In some conditions you want a bit of flex and deflection; where the trail bike pairs well with the smaller diameter forks, they tend...

Honestly, I haven’t paid much attention to Vital recently as I prefer the editorial content from previous presenters who are gone. But THIS. Wow. Three guys my height who are legit shredders AND can discuss what they experienced in a coherent and insightful fashion. Well done, sirs.

Suspension also has a huge effect on topped out geometry. When descending with your weight forward you naturally get more compression in the fork and likely will want to compensate by having a higher front end. More travel increases this geometry shift and a XC bike may not require as high of a bar for the same downhill grade. Being a taller rider and facing component limitations as described above, I’ve always added 10-20mm of fork travel vs the stock configuration and have found this to help with fit when crazy handlebars and stem spacer stacks aren’t reasonable.

Great review. I only ride assegai DH maxxgrip. How does the grappler compare at maximum lean angle in loose over hard?

Anyone else blown away by how much time difference there was? Especially given it is a brand-new frame he is less used to compared to a personal race bike.

Amen! Same here. Although I did just switch to double down assegais just because I think they feel a bit better than the exo+. From my own experience/reasoning, I think the stiffer carbon rims are what get most people. I am of course speaking anecdotally, as I have never done any testing to prove my theory. By far the most common pinch flats I see are on Bontrager line carbon wheels. Mostly the 2020 and earlier. Having tried those wheels, they were pretty stiff to me, and I could definitely see how that may lead to more pinches. I would...

As in Michelins were worse? Well now what, I was all set to buy a set once they are available :D When is the Conti Minion coming out? Apparently Black Chilli works really well in the winter. Maybe rename the thread to a 'Tyres thread' or open a new one?

Oven cleaner in a bucket works, but can't be any of the newer Eviro-Friendly stuff. Gotta keep checking it though and use rubber gloves. Too long and it'll start to get a black finish. Can be scotch-brited and polished back to silver though. There are a few Youtube videos (non-bike specific) on doing it.
