On the free spin while mounted comments: Free spin without load doesn't really indicate much. For example think of those fidget spinners people used to have. Taking out bearing grease made them spin forever in your hand. Turn a bearing under load, without oil or grease, and the friction tends to go up quite a bit. Before I start, I realize there’s a lot of subjectivity to pedal testing and I’ve not used all the pedals on here. That said, I think this comparison could be a better, critiques below. 1. DMR Vault pedals shouldn’t be #1. Their quality/reliability is not good. Based on this article, in January I bought the Vault 2 Ti Mag versions. They are expensive, which I don’t mind as long as I get quality. With less than 200 miles (essentially less than 12 rides) one pedal is squeaking. Haha thanks for the reply! Not sure what inspired me to actually leave that comment instead of just moving on. You guys do a great job with these shootouts in general, including this one, I just haven't had a good experience with the DMR's. Since we're here, why don't the composites work well in the wet? Pins aside, I would expect them to have better grip than the polished surface of, say, a DMR, no?

Why does DMR continue to win these shootouts? I'll just say it....DMR pedals are garbage and I've got no fewer than 3 clapped out sets to prove it. They cost a fortune and only last for only a couple weeks before they start feeling/sounding terrible. Composite pedals from OneUp or PNW feel better, last longer and cost a fraction of the price of any pedal in this shootout.

Kudos on the build - well specced (money put to where it counts). Refreshing to see a smart spec/people who do a build because they know what works vs. those who build for a fashion show.

The Zeb has been an amazing upgrade from the 36. I don't think it's too much fork for the bike considering what I normally ride which is PNW steep, rooty, droppy terrain. I've set the head angle to slack mode and the fork just eats up everything and inspires tons of confidence. It's heavier than the 36 for sure and that is noticeable on the uphill grind but it's well worth the tradeoff in downhill performance. If you are planning to ride your evo mostly in steep mode I would definitely not go with the Zeb but if you are...

This is a way better, more nuanced take than "who rides flat pedals and cares about weight?" To add some missing nuance to my own comment, I think there are plenty of trail riders on flat pedals who do care about weight, and pedals are a pretty good place to feel a difference. If it's compromising safety then I'm not on board.

I agree with BBM above. Pedals are like helmets for me, "lightest" being more of a red flag than a selling point. If super light pedals tickle your fancy that these might be the ticket, but I pretty regularly (and accidentally) do horrible things to my pedals on rocks and roots. Survivability is pretty high on my priority list, like a helmet.

(My mistake, thought you said mullet wheel, not link in your other comment). Yes you're right, 23 S-Works frames come standard with the mullet link (27.5/29 setup). Was always going to run it low and slack (for extra FC and RC more than anything as I'm right on the fence between L/XL and liked those numbers on the geo chart). This drops the BB by 9mm from Neutral/High so theroized the mullet link brings it back to base settings (apparently it had a +11mm effect + a bonus 5mm travel). Giving it a go full 29er with mullet. That's definitely the mullet link from Specialized in the rear. I've got both(29" and 27.5" link) and the mullet link has a slightly different shape where the shock yoke attaches and and towards rear most pivot bolts. I just checked out the specs on the Spesh website for the S-Works StEvo frameset and it lists the frame as being set up for 29f/27.5r trail geometry.

Full 29. At 6'1 / 185cm on an S4 with my riding style, I don't have any issues getting around tight corners or with tyre buzz. More pros to full 29 than going mullet (for my circumstance).
