If built right the carbon wheel can flex vertically to help prevent pinch flats (see slo mo video)

bturman Liked a product review First Ride: Öhlins TTX Shock - Yellow Gold
7/15/2013 12:52pm
Review by Brandon Turman // Photos by Cameron Baird, Specialized, & Brandon Turman If you want to cause a stir in the bike industry, one surefire way to do it is a bright yellow shock in a sea of black. What does yellow mean in the suspension world? It means Öhlins is here, and they mean business. After more than one year of testing, tweaking, and tuning, a collaboration between Specialized and Öhlins has yielded the TTX (Model # TTX22M), a shock specifically tuned for Specialized's big-hitting gravity bikes. We had the opportunity to ride a 2014 Demo 8 equipped...

Krispy Added a comment about feature Sneak Peek: First Glimpse of SRAM's X01 Drivetrain
6/19/2013 4:24pm Dudes, I gotta say My XX1 group is amazing. It is not perfect, but after 6 month and 10 races it is a game changer and i can't imagine going back to a front derailleur. The range (for me) is perfect. The XX1 cassette is about the same weight as XTR 10 sp. This pic looks to be an XX1 cassette. Why wait to release 2 groups a year later than release them as they design them? The X9 cranks are hollow, and have the same splined spider mount as XO/XX1. It looks like they chose a 104mm BCD, that...

Zoomlinski Liked a product review Tested: Shimano Zee Disc Brakes - Affordable Power
5/16/2013 6:32am
by Nick Zuzelski Arguably the biggest star of Shimano's Zee lineup is the brake, which offers riders many of the same technology advancements and features of their big brother Saint. Luckily for us, Zee brakes come at a pretty substantial cost savings of about $140 per pair over Saint. Zee Brake Highlights Servo wave lever pivot Shorty levers High rigidity ceramic pistons for heat insulation Anti-slip dimpled lever blade Radiation fin pad with new metallic compound to improve control and consistency Super stiff high-power 3-layer brake hose for a more consistent lever feel One-way bleed for easy and clean servicing...

Favorite rider ever. The fact that he made that himself with just a Go Pro is amazing.

5/9/2013 3:24pm
Reviewed by Evan Turpen // Photos by Brandon Turman For the longest time Banshee Bikes were well off my radar. In 2007 I was a professional downhill racer and at the time their products represented heavy, overbuilt, and technologically lacking machines built for the “huckers” amongst us. That all changed in 2008, though, when they introduced the Legend MK1 downhill race bike and their unique approach to new product development. They released 50 frames to a select group of riders, racers, and engineers who all provided feedback that eventually went into the production frames. Banshee then went on to release...

Krispy Added a comment about feature Race Report: 2013 Enduro Cup #1, Moab, Utah
5/8/2013 9:21am I don't have the World Enduro Series handbook memorized, but they call for 1- minimum 4 stages mostly downhill, 2-minimum 20 minutes combined time, 3- the most fun way down using the local trails. All of these rules were adhered to in Moab.

5/8/2013 7:28am
Reviewed by Fred Robinson // Photos by Ian Collins // Studio shots by Fanatik Bike Co. After riding squishy bikes made out of aluminum down bumpy hills for several years, I had no real desire to try any other frame material for my downhill bike. I was happy with aluminum - no real complaints from me. That was until the day I saw a photo of a matte-black plastic Batmobile on two wheels and instantly thought to myself "I need that in my life, right now." There was nothing wrong with my current bike, it had modern geometry, bad ass...

Krispy Added a comment about feature Race Report: 2013 Enduro Cup #1, Moab, Utah
5/8/2013 6:49am While it's easy to point out the lack of vertical descending one must understand it's still spring. At first i wasn't too interested in attending either..but of course, spring rolls around and everyone is signing up and ready to RACE! I had a great time despite the courses being pretty pedally. Great camaraderie, fun trails and an excellent overall event. Remember, there is a MBE race in moab that has 7000' of descending late summer when the high mountains dry out!! The Enduro Cup at Canyons Resort had 1500' of climbing and 3000' of descending last year with one gondola...

bturman Liked a product review 2013 Test Sessions: Ibis Mojo SL-R
5/1/2013 3:26pm
Reviewed by Matt Thompson, Steve Wentz, Jess Pedersen, & Brandon Turman // Photos by Shawn Spomer & Brandon Turman Founded in 1981 in Scot Nicol's garage, Ibis Cycles has a long and rich history in mountain biking, even though they've had to overcome a few bumps along the way. Throughout the years they've developed a number of bikes that are seen as iconic - innovation in the sport and often a welcome breath of fresh air amidst lots of marketing hype. They're a company that builds what they want to ride, and in 2006, that was the Ibis Mojo Carbon...

bturman Liked a product review Tested: Five Ten Freerider VXi - Our Go-To Trail Shoes
4/23/2013 2:42pm
Reviewed by Steve Wentz, Matt Thompson, and Brandon Turman // Photos by Shawn Spomer and Brandon Turman "Wait wait wait… you want us to test a shoe with no tread? On a mountain bike?" The proposition seemed preposterous. How could it work? Surely we'd be slipping and sliding all over the place? Needless to say, the new Five Ten Freerider VXi shoes are an interesting breed. They feature the classic Dotty tread pattern at the toe and heal, but are treadless under the ball of your foot where your pedals rest while riding. The new Stealth Contact outsole pattern is...
