7/10/2026 11:55am Sure, but folks were suggesting that bikes might not use a belt if it weren't for the Gates prize. Zerode, as an example, was using them 4 years before Gates offered up the prize, so clearly, not the driver for them. As mentioned a few times before, I think GBs and belt drives are an interesting solution for gravity sports. Unclear, in my mind at least, if they are definitively better than conventional drive systems, even in that area. It's pretty tough to decipher all of the politics and contractual obligations that might prevent some of the winningest DH teams...

7/10/2026 11:55am The prize is for the belt, not the gearbox. It just happens you need a gearbox if you want to run a belt.

7/10/2026 7:31am I too am a left foot forward guy. I have had pretty good luck over the years with derailleurs and hangers. If all of a sudden, they were gone, a whole new world of line choices would open up for me. I think I have always given an extra bit of caution to that side of the bike. Also, would not mind the improved rear suspension feel without that additional weight back there. Color me gearbox curious for sure.

7/10/2026 7:15am Imagine strapping a pound of weight to your front fork axle... bet it's a pretty noticeable effect on suspension performance

7/10/2026 6:47am A better question is if any DH bikes would still have derailleurs if you didn't have massive relationships between SRAM, Shimano and the big brands. Moving a bunch of weight off the rear axle to an enclosed system under the bb is perfect for DH.

7/10/2026 6:40am Is 100k actually a carrot? Hardware development is expensive, I'm certain Atherton didn't developed their gearbox bike for less than 100k. I feel like riding a winning platform is more valuable than the prize money.

7/9/2026 5:23pm Everyone knows gearboxes are currently less efficient than derailleurs. But with a gearbox sitting 2nd overall in the EDR, running on multiple competitive DH teams, and looking like the future of ebikes, the door is open for more mainstream options. We're at an inflection point whether you like it or not — this isn't the same gearbox talk we've had...

7/9/2026 1:48pm It is always interesting to see what companies are willing to patent. Sometimes they reveal new, out-of-the-box thinking for an innovative approach to solving an old problem. A lot of times they are just to make sure no one else can make money off an idea without paying them royalties, particularly useful if there are tough aspects of the problem that you don't know how to resolve. Someone else solves those bits, and pays you royalties for any art covered in your patent. I'm curious if anyone has tracked the number of Sram and Shimano patents that have resulted in...

7/9/2026 11:08am excuse linking the "other site" but pretty funny given recent convo on gearboxes, especially claims about only being viable on ebikes https://www.pinkbike.com/news/gates-patents-a-cvt-gearbox-for-non-elect…

7/8/2026 9:54am For the Avinox system, EMTB review projected not next year but the following, which makes sense since they’re clearly labeling it a prototype/proof of concept.

7/6/2026 11:47am Absolutely. But it's not hard to play this out: the MGU is positioned to become a mainstream option, and plenty of riders will feel the benefits of shedding all that weight from the rear axle and removing the clutch's influence on suspension action. If it works well on ebikes, it's only logical that demand will grow to bring it to...
