By this logic, we'd be on bikes with wheelbases of 1000mm. But we're not, we're pushing 1300mm in a lot of bikes, and they still go round corners just fine on trails we were riding 20+ years ago.

See Paul Aston for experiments in getting the same/similar ratios for taller guys. As a guy that is 182cm tall riding a trail bike with 1300mm wheelbase on plenty of janky right Shore trails I would say your thoughts on wheelbase are wrong. Do I want to go longer? Not for a 160mm trail bike, but for longer travel I certainly would.

7/2/2025 2:36pm Racers have crashed on short stems because they haven't used them with long chainstays. If you feel more comfortable on a 42,5mm stem then stick with that. I've tested -10, 10, 17 and 20mm in the last decade and I've settled on 20mm. My bike has 474mm chainstays and I have loads of front end grip.

What does running a stem that 'matches the fork offset' have anything to do with anything? This is one of the most WTF claims I have heard regarding bikes and bike fits. Where in relation to this offset is the tyre to ground contact patch? How does the handlebar to patch relation change relative to wheel size? Fork axle to crown? Dynamic sag? Travel position? Head angle?! Most importantly, what does the position you attach your handlebars to have anything to do with riding dynamics when you can have multiples of 10 mm difference in handlebar setback (effective reach or...

5/13/2025 2:13pm I do it all the time. Helps make it a better allround tyre, i.e. better in soft conditions. Haven't tried a HF3 and not a fan of the Minion DHF. It does work better than an Eddy Current front though.

5/5/2025 6:35am The Super gravity has a soft zone because it's a dual ply on the sides and singleply on the top. The Super Downhill is dual ply all around. I think you need to try the Michelin DH tyres for more protection or run an insert to protect your rims.

5/4/2025 1:04pm Haven't tried the Helldiver but can vouch for the Hellkat. Have run the Hellkat pro 2.6 AEC front and back in mullet setup with inserts. They roll well, corner great (due to the round profile) and have decent grip in dry and hard conditions. Highly recommend them, plus they tend to be cheaper than other brands (at least in Europe).

5/4/2025 1:01pm Which Schwalbe casing are you talking about? SuperGravity or SuperDownhill? The only casing thicker than a Schwalbe SuperDownhill is the Michelin DH casing from my experience? Maxxis DH casing are only a tad thicker the Schwalbe Supertrail casing... Can't comment on the contis as I haven't tried them or held them.

5/1/2025 6:01am Long chainstays put more weight on the front wheel. On the steeps it makes it necessary to shift your weight a tad further back. Having long chainstays also allows you to run more stack without losing front end grip. I've gone to a taller handlebar since going to 475mm chainstays.

4/18/2025 1:23pm His enduro bike, the one that was stolen, has 445 reach with those chainstays and a 180mm head tube. It's the trail bike that has that reach with super short chainstays.
