when you feel like you're being pulled down a hill by your bike in steep section and scare the shit out of yourself because you no longer feel in control -thats too much reach. go ride a long reach bike down a gnarly steep chute. if you cant continue relocate your body rearwards in steep sections to feel comfortable because you have fully extended your arm "travel" -thats too much reach. The steeper terrain a bike can go down, the shorter the reach will be to allow for arm travel and body maneuverability. long reach allows for you to be...

Agree with Spomer on this. In the same way that mud spikes are known to squirm on rocks and roots, Magic Mary’s can squirm and fold on a super hard-packed trail, especially if you’re hitting a berm, steep lip, or banked lip with additional g-forces. It’s the opposite of traction- it’s super sketchy. It feels vague and weird, like taking 10 psi out of your tires.

1. it certainly is "a thing" - calling all trail builders? b. with that said, let me clarify what i mean about tracking up lips and landings. this consideration is for rhythm/dirt jump lines or pumptracks that are manicured and, as mentioned, SOFT. bigger knobs will track up lips and landings making the jumps deteriorate more quickly. there were a few times i rode by freshly groomed jump lines at our local park b/c it had rained and they tuned up the jumps. but the dirt was soft and i wasn't going to ruin the trail builders' work just because...

While I really like to see boundaries being pushed, most of these gearboxed dream machines are simply out of reach for us regulars, I'd love to ride a Druid or p-train but I just cannot afford it... So can somebody please make affordable high pivot for the masses? Smile

I'm not sure there is the money in DH racing to bring in the anal and knowledgable talent into the scene to drive to push these things... When you have reputable bike brands having the frame development outsourced and only a few 'weirdos' pushing the envelope (does anybody else do data acquisition and development to the level of Jack racing? We lost Dave Garland and Fabien Barel I think pushed it a bit with Canyon, anyone else?), you can see how this hasn't been investigated fully yet. There are a ton of things that could be tested besides weight, I'm...

Welcome to Washington! I think you've got the right idea when it comes to amount of travel, but I would highly encourage you to not spend that much money if you're riding the green and blue lines at Duthie. I'm a former pro downhill racer and I would never spend that much on a bike, because I think the benefits are so small. The difference between SLX and XTR is almost nothing. Ditto for GX and XX1. Even Deore and NX bikes are totally rideable. You'll end up replacing a few things due to personal preference (taller/shorter bars, different tires...
