It's absolutely crazy to me how comfy Dylan Maples looks in those conditions for someone who grew up in California.

Backslope Trailbuilders buffed up the jumps and berms last night. Note the tire mark on the Michelin banner where somebody had a massive case yesterday before they were closed.

Blue skies all day today. The natural dirt and sand should dry out nicely

Track is a bummer. The top is cool but it’s less than half of the track. Less in the woods than last year and such a huge chunk is just open slope and motorway. Hardly even a downhill track if you ask me. Maybe they’re trying to appeal to some nostalgia for east-coast NORBA days of yore, but even those open slopes were more technical and engaging than these.

Props to the builders for doing what they could with what they had, but I don’t understand why Whiteface got a second (or even first, really) DH world cup.

Flat grass turns are getting chopped out. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see somebody blow out of the rut and the track during a race run.

Hopefully it will be so bad it will make for some really entertaining racing

Word on the hill is that the powers at be got rid of some of the cooler sections (like the lower waterfall) due to "water quality" issues. Glad they left some of the tech in still.

Forgive me if this was discussed last year, but why is the course so short?  Was it a land use issue?  NIMBYism?   I remember doing a race back in the day, 2008ish?  At Whiteface that was like 10 minutes long.  I think they even did a chainless race and some of the top pros were actually faster on their chainless runs.

They got the first one because they bid on it, the second one because it was a multi year contract.

Additional TT session now since the bottom was closed yesterday.

Responding to track comments:
-Regarding it being short: Yesterday's timed training was not the entire course; they closed the bottom of the course, so times were super short. The track is likely going to be over 3 minutes long.  Which is what Warner Brothers wants (courses that aren't too long so they can show full runs).
-Regarding why it's all out in the open: When they designed and built the course, they had a lot of environmental restrictions (trees, sensitive areas), which forced them to have a lot of track out in the open. Then, right before the race last year, a local group tried to shut the track down and stop the race. There was still pressure on them after the race, so this year, they cut out the lower woods and that waterfall section.
-Regarding how they got two years: As Goldstone just said, they bid on a race, they got the race, and they signed a multi-year deal as part of that bid. I thought it was a 3-year minimum, but it could definitely be 2.

It was a 3 year contract but dh has only ran for 2. This is the third year for xc

my question is not how, but why. Why is Whiteface interested in spending so much money on a World Cup when there is minimal mountain biking infrastructure in Lake Placid and no bike park? Why did they spend all of that money, then bungle the permits and build a substandard course which they lost or gave up a portion of?

You’re not the only one wondering that.

Just an educated guess here, but someone on the board or in leadership wanted a world class sporting event to happen to show they are still capable of hosting world level sporting events basically. It happens that mountain bike racing was the lowest hanging fruit in that regard so they pursued that avenue. Ski resorts and probably definitely places that have hosted the Olympics in the past get weird about their legacies and proving they still have something to offer.

Are Q1 and Q2 broadcast on tv or on youtube or anywhere else at all? I appreciate they couldnt broadcast every single riders qualifying run due to time constraints but is there ever a recap shown of it anywhere?

I thought id seen qualifying broadcast before but dont know if im just remembering years gone by...

I have tnt sport channels in the uk that gives me a log in for hbo max app that lets me watch the races live. But I'd love to see a bit of Q1 and Q2.
Sometimes watching the live Q1/2 live timing feeds is more interesting/fun than watching the actual race sometimes..... maybe im the only one who thinks like that though?

Q1 and this overall race is already getting interesting... any boots on the ground have the scoop on what happened in Asa's first split and if Amaury is OK?

do you know if they ever show a recap of the q1/2 runs anywhere?

Considering how much money WBD are charging for us to watch the races live, not showing qualifying is such a misstep by them... its hard to understand the reasoning behind it. Even if they didn't show it live, a 40 minute recap episode could show the bulk of the runs!

I was using Tiz streams until recently, I think thats what I'll be going back to for the 2027 races...
