latest from red bull regarding, what appears to be the slopestyle event for crankworx? i know there's a constant evolution going on, but trying to meld big mountain and dirt jumping stuff in the same judged contest seems like a nearly-impossible feat. how does a corked 7 over a double compare to a technical north shore stunt with a drop? they're both gnarly and awesome, but they're both incredibly different. maybe it's a contest that consists of overall runs in different sections? i don't know, but thankfully i'm not a judge and it sounds like claw, semenuk, montgomery, vanderham and more were in on the meeting, so they'll be helping with the decisions. -spomer

Red Bull Joyride is a Freeride Mountain Bike event that will demand competitors to incorporate all facets of the sport including Slopestyle, Dirt Jump and North Shore. The course has been designed by professional riders in cooperation with the best builders in the business and promises to be the first of its kind. By ensuring maximum inclusion of natural terrain combined with gigantic man made features, Red Bull Joyride will challenge the possibilities and boundaries of Freeride Mountain Biking as we know them.

From the beginning this event was designed to be a game changer in the world of Mountain Biking so there was only one place to showcase it. Red Bull Joyride will take place at Whistler-Blackcomb, on the final weekend of Kokanee Crankworx on July 23rd, 2011 with the course situated at the base of Whistler Mountain for all to see. The quality of both the course and competition will be second to none, so much that the Freeride Mountain Bike Association recognized the event as a Diamond Stop, one of only two worldwide.

In early February a ‘Meeting of the Minds’ was organized to design the Red Bull Joyride course. The concept was simple, put together something that will progress Freeride Mountain biking while staying true to what the riders want and need in a competition of this level. Together with the help of Red Bull and Kokanee Crankworx professional riders Darren Berrecloth, Brandon Semenuk, Mike Montgomery, Thomas Vanderham and Cam Zink joined forces with world-class course builder Paddy Kaye of Joyride Bike Parks to create a series of features that would allow for maximum expression and flow from start to finish. All of the features were brought to life by artist Scott Dickson who carefully drew the course as the riders provided key feedback and design ideas. Ironically Scott also designed one of the first posters for the Whistler Bike Park in 2000.

Berrecloth, as a long time competitor, was especially excited about this, “the opportunity for us riders to provide our ideas for Red Bull Joyride is phenomenal, with this kind of input it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser and a rider favourite.” There will be a number of different options available to the competitors with the over arcing principal that all lines are in play.

Red Bull Joyride, in essence, will offer up the biggest mountain bike playground ever seen in competition within the biggest mountain bike festival in the world, Kokanee Crankworx.

Surely it's possible. Just look at the Chatel Mountain Style event.

I think the FMB now has guidelines on how to judge fairly, although it's likely still pretty subjective.

Sounds like what they tried to do with the old redbull 'ride' contests in austrailia.

Those were kind of hokey so I'd imagine they've got some new ideas to try it again. Looking forward to see what they come up with. Kinda cool they're resurrecting the old joyride name.

It will be interesting as to how they build the "big mountain" concept into this course, besides ladder bridges and big drops I don't know what they can really do to showcase the talent of the big mountain riders.

Either way, should be a cool event, especially since the riders are getting a lot of input.

Excellent idea! Creative lines, speed, style, flow, and amplitude... all of those things are what makes me stoked on MTB.

They are puttin Mountain Biking back into slopestyle!!!! It is about time!!!!

And yea it does sound like the old Red Bull Ride but it is definately going to be more friendly to the 4-6 inch bikes unlike australia which needed a Dh Bike

Ladders are for firemen as Tsage once said.
Well firemen and the North Shore over trees and rivers.
Last thing we need is another fake skinny serving no purpose except to break backs as Chase may remember.
maybe some sprinkler system with slippery moss and dirt can be used to at least keep them legit :-)

i like the idea of freestyle events where a real 6-7 inch travel FR bike is the best weapon.
these bikes are so amazing!!!
and bmx is making mtb look chumpish right now-
we need to showcase what our techno-interweb-babble has got us!

Part two is up. Not much more in the way of details, but you can tell the course will have a lot of variety based on what the riders are saying:

The Kokanee Cabin. So dope! I *think* there will be a ladder on top when it's all done.

That cabin is awesome. I think you are right about the ladder bridge on top of the roof (at least thats what it looked like from the initial sketches of the course). Would be kind of cool if they added a jump on the side and build a big wallride off and on the side of the cabin. Cant wait to go check it out!!!
