Die Trend, Die.

Trend that should die:
Hating on 29ers
Hating on BMXers, XCers, Roadies, etc.
Heavy, incapable 6" bikes
Overly light, incapable 6" bikes
Races with expensive entry fees and no organization
Confusing and overly complex categorization/classes at races

Keep it goin:
Web edits
Carbon bikes
Fast Americans
Scrubs, whips, manuals, bonks, flatties, tables.....etc

maybe 29 front, 26 rear...it doesn't get any more legitimate than that

DIE: 15mm axles

DIE: planned obsolescence
YES...

Planned obsolescence should be illegal...and much of the bike industry is guilty.

Additionally, most riders (including myself from time to time) are VERY guilty of buying into perceived obsolescence...is a degree slacker head angle really gonna make you that much faster than your current DH bike? Do you really need fresh tires for every race run? We're not all exactly world cup level DHers here...lets have some common sense.

I applaud companies like chris king, thomson, turner etc for building parts that last AND backing them up. Turner will turn your beat ass 5 year old frame into a brand new beauty for under $300. The bike industry needs more of this.

DIE: talking about bikes on the internet instead of actually riding
DIE: TLD's big practical joke; "how retarded can we make our designs look and still get riders to pay ludicrous prices to look like an ass..." Joke's on us.

die:
-29er's-the point of them?
-15mm axle- the point again? xc riders should stick with qr's
-hating on skinny jeans- its not gay, unless you're gay
-building on top/over other's work so that you can ride it.
-not building,and just riding
-full body armor
-the debate on wearing gloves- no, it's not like we wanna be like blenki, it's just comfortable
-plastic pedals
-manitou forks being so shitty. make better products
-carbon dh linkage
-one footed Shoulder buzzers. you arent kyle strait, they are ugly!
-the cost of dh bikes, well, everybike for that matter. it doesnt cost 3k to build a bike frame.
-dh bikes in the skatepark.

i second the loud kits death, that shit looks ridiculous. i guess i'd think different if i was a cali boy though.

How about Whistler? I've heard its amazing, I believe its amazing, but I'm tired of seeing it in every mtb site/magazine/shop bathroom poster. I'm not doubting that its incredible, but i just want to see some new spots that aren't beat into the ground.

Illegal dh trails on Forest land. It doesn't work here. Go help one of the many fine folks digging their asses off at legal spots like Hawksnest, Beech, etc.

Things I'm into:

All these new badass trailbikes that are light, stiff, pedal well, and straight rip apart trails on the way down. keep up the good work on that front.

All these new LEGAL spots that keep popping up right where i live (dirty south) because people are getting down with the grunt work. thanks so much!

Man, you guys are a LOT like the BMXers who hate on the 26" wheels with your closed-mindedness on the 29er issue. Get over it... Look at a dirtbike sometime, why don't ya?
I, for one, want the trend of hating on 29ers to die.
Also, companies that void warranties when their products are used to ride aggressively...WTF?

RE: companies pussing out and not covering their products when the ads they use to sell them show agressive riding. I know it's a site sponsor, but DB bikes blows when it comes to warrantees. If you actually ride the Mission the way the video shows, it will break, and they will not replace your frame. That is lame.

Tight pants keep certain bits from getting smashed/caught-up when riding a DJ with the seat slammed to the tire (mind the gap!), they do look goofy tho.

running DJ/street bikes brakeless... I swear if you run into me one more time at the skatepark you will be sorry.

Things I'd like to go away

- giving a shit what somebody else is wearing

- staring at eachothers bikes like a bunch of nerds.

- just riding trails and never doing any trail work

- asking what the geometry is on my bike. It either rides sweet or it doesn't.

- rubber shit on my gloves that doesn't do anything but add heat and make me look like a power ranger. Put that shit on the outside pinky knuckle of the glove where you actually hit trees. Carbon knuckles can go away too. Does anyone ever crash on their knuckles?

- neverending helmet cam shots. Snooorrrr.

- photographers not getting paid with they deserve.

- pro riders not getting paid what they deserve.

- yeah, for sure.. overpriced parts of any kind that fall apart just as fast as the lowend parts.

- people not knowing how gnarly shit is made over in taiwan. Yeah, this trend isn't going to go away anytime soon, but if you do some research as to what kinds of chemicals and work conditions are considered 'quite alright' over in taiwan, you'll probably think twice about your purchases. At least for now our fellow companies are getting a little richer by making everything a little bit cheaper.

Things I'd like to stay:

- Seeing more and more dot certified helmets

- watching the sport progress

- all the sick videos that the common grom is throwing into the mix. any music is fine. boy george, I don't give a shit if the riding, editing and filming is done right.

- better and better hd helmet cam footage. Holy cow they are getting so nice now! Just don't show us the hour long trail you rode you bobble head.

- more videos of people having fun riding.

- people building super fun trails that last

- people having fun riding. whether they pulled they're first schleyble top or pinned it out of their comfort zone. If they're having fun, that's the point. Skid like napolean.. jump like pedro, huck like bender, I don't care.

- People respecting Steve Peat, Kirt Voreis and the pros that have done so much for our sport with a good attitude we can only hope to have.

- Vital continuing to have the best content and crowd on the web!

Over priced full suspension bikes! There seems to be no middle ground either really pricey or crap.

alright one more that i just thought of

foot jams and foot jams trick combos

they are cool and difficult yes, but that doesnt mean you have to do one every time your bike leaves the ground, they just get old and boring to watch

1) bars over 2.5 inches in rise ... just go ride a bmx bike if you want 4 inch rise bars

1.2) bars over 30 inches wide, unless you have the wing span on a condor you just dont need that big of bars, especially if you are 15 years old and only 5'2"

2) ridiculously colored and designed kits, i do not need to look like a highlighter when i ride downhill

3)everyone and their mom trying to ride gloveless because they think they look like blenki

4)flat bars on downhill bikes

5)dumb electronic songs in 80% of edits that get released on a daily basis (sometimes the songs do work though)

6) 29ers, they just wont be as good and versatile as 26s, we figured out the correct wheel size, just let it be

7) titanium bolts, you just dont need them
1.2 - Wide bars = huge leverage. I have 32" bars and you really should try it
2 - Some people like to stand out, especially if they have sponsors to please.
4 - Flat bars? Really? I'll make the same point as 32" bars, because almost everyone I ride with has a flat bar, and once again, you really need to try it.
5 - Lot's of people like electronic music, just like you like Nickleback
6 - 29ers make a lot of sense for XC, but I agree that they don't have any place in DH
7 - Ti bolts are light. This is good.

"For the record I ride with 5.10s now and used to ride w/Vans before 5.10s.." Clearly a sofisticated man about town. All in good fun. I will say though if you trace the ROOTS of Vans, Etnies or DC you'll find any and all action sports at the core, you sure cant say that about nike. Im just saying reward those deep roots and kick down some dough for a pair of OG shoes the next time you buy, its good for the Soul.
ive ridin with vans dc and etnies, they all fell apart in weeks because the rubber was designed for SKATEBOARDING, so metal pins on pedals destroy em, ive been riding with nike 6.0 air insugents for a couple seasons now, only replaced one pair so far cause my dog ate them lol, so.... 2 seasons on one pair of nikes... hmmm, compared to the average 2 months max on dc vans or etnies.... never the less i did hear that 5.10s are pretty sweet.

1. buying bikes as picking up trends just because its cool:
- fixies as going to work bikes
- 29rs, - not that im against, but there's more of "being cool or different" than logical thinking in it
- DJ HTs with stiff forks - how cool is it to mess up your wrists for the rest of your life?! buy one if you are really good, but if you struggle to do an x-up, just stay with something that forgives your mistakes
2. flashy graphics: - pyjama style clothing like latest TLDs - super coloured bikes - no it's not cool, it's punk! and it's dead for some time now, stop reviving it!
3.trashing on bike forums on lycra, skinsuits and SPDs
4.trashing on bike forums on Carbon Fiber in general
5.Over armoured disc burners riding trails or all mountain... - if you are affraid to ride, just ride something easier! Body armour just messes up you confidence! How good can you become if you are sure that you are going to crash and you do everything to prevent the consequences?! Just work on preventing it to happen! You look like a huge gnome and you smell even worse

6.As the opposite: DH supersonics riding without body armour - hello Blinky! what's the point of you leattbrace while you dont wear back protection and absolutely no gloves.

7. DJ and street riders without helmets (just because BMX mags promote no helmet "im free, im different" attitude)

things that im glad have gone/need to go

hating on anyone else thats having fun riding a bike, if they have a bike that they like to ride then good for them. hating on it makes you as bad as all the bmx guys that hate on mtb

long xc stems

riding and not digging or building

body armour on top of your jersey/shirt. if you wanna wear it over your cloths get a mx roost guard, dainese goes under a jersey

web edits longer than 5 mins, some are good but most of the time it gets excessive, when if it was edited to be shorter, it would prob turn out better

good things

colored parts, theres nothing wrong with a good looking bike

how easily everyone is making little web edits, pretty awesome

companies like pro tec promoting guys to ride and film with the monthly contests

vital mtb

riding you bike to have fun

Nike shoes, can we admit that they bought there way in the front door but now there welcome to leave out the back door.

Im indifferent to the skinny jeans, I guess there a little funny, but do they have to be red, purple, teal and white. Stop stealing your little sisters pants!

Trend I love, kids picking up there parents video cameras and going to town making really decent little films......keep em comin!
I'm glad that the crowd that likes to pretend that their mountain bikes are motocross bikes are dieing out. Well, almost. It doesn't have a throttle people, get over it. And as long as we are making fun of skinny jeans we might as well make fun of flat bill hats and clown like moto costumes. If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then the DH community is a bunch of MX poseurs. Maybe we could come up with our own style?

Die:

Peeps who think their kind of riding is the best and no other kind of riding is as good, and they will make you know it.

Lack of participation on forums because a couple douches kill threads w/ stupid remarks not even related to original poster's question or comment.

Peeps who won't let me build on their land. Don't they know I'm adding value (for free) to an otherwise useless piece of space!?

Peeps who refuse to progress. Don't ride the trail if you're not ever going to try to do any of the features!

Rising costs of parts/frames/forks etc.

Keep Rockin':

Coaches - LeeLikesBikes, Gene Hamilton, Fluidride Guy, etc. Helping riders progress, one class at a time.

Race Series - You promoters work effing hard for little to no reward. Thank you for doing it.

Peeps who have figured out they just like riding bikes and don't need race results or bike weight to prove it.

Bars over 30" wide are one of the best things that have happened to DH for us bigger guys. 30.75" Seems to be about perfect for me! So much better then the 28" We used to be limited to, but if your 5'2" stick to something smaller.

Die:

North Shore - Seriously, not even the North Shore likes north shore. Stop building that crap.

Beaurocratic red tape - Let us build trails. get over the liability aspect. How many people get hurt riding DH vs other sports?

US liability in general - Seriously, Obama, do something useful in office and change our land owner liability laws!

UCI/USA Cycling not wanting to progress the sport (remember nationals?)

Sierra Club. It's my wilderness too you pompous assholes.

Weight weenies. Take a dump and learn to ride.

Specialized marketing. No matter how hard you try, rotating a parallelagram will create an arching wheelpath, not a vertical one. Any 5th grader can tell you that, you arn't fooling anyone.

Live on!

Fluidride Cup (and all grassroots racing!)

Sol Vista. Keep up the big jumps guys! Stoked for the race this year!

I'll agree with the web edits, those are sick!

US DH making a presence on the WC! Come on Gwin, Strobel, Riffel, Warren, Ropelato etc.

Wide bars, I'm 6'3. your 30 inch bars make me look like a tyranasaurus rex when I ride. Keep 'em uncut 800!

Customization. I like seeing people get artistic with their frames and helmets, but go beyond just trying to match your components. Custom paints/decals are cool.

Homemade stuff. DC's gearbox was still one of the coolest bike related things I've seen.

15 qr must die. Maxle light weighs 19 grams more than 15qr. It was a stupid idea in the first place. Another standard was not necessary.

29ers are fine, I guess, if that's what you want. What sucks about 29ers is the same thing that sucks about Apple computers: it's not the product, it's the people.

When you build a "culture" around a product, than I begin to hate the people who consider themselves part of that culture. Telling me that "Mac's never have problems, they are the ultimate computer, all others are inferior" or that "29ers can roll over anything" makes you an idiot.

If you like them, fine. But please admit neither is perfect, and stop showing me what your damn I-phone can do? And stickers on your car, Apple people? Seriously?

North shore riding is amazing, the roots and rocks part. Building ladders for the sake of building ladders is retarted and needs to go the way of the dodo.
