Spectator Crashes While Riding Adam Brayton's Bike 23

You couldn't make this stuff up. Adam Brayton took a big crash during his race run in Cairns, which ended with a broken leg and a severe gash, reportedly 27cm long. While he was being tended to trackside, a spectator attempted to ride down the track with Brayton's bike, only to crash on the whoop section lower down. We had another course hold while he was evacuated too, and Steve Peat got a rerun as he was shown a red flag during his original run.

Adam Brayton's crash and response to the incident:

"Yo, I just hit a tree in my run. Spectators were awesome couldn't thank them enough. The guy who took my bike down was a good man, no idea why he hit the whoops but I don't blame him they were sick. I think he's ok though. He was in my ambulance on a spine board and was pretty k'od, but that's all I know. I'm going to pop down to hospital tomorrow and see how he's doing."




Update from Peaty (via Instagram):


"Ok everyone, this is Ben Bunny McGowan, he is the reason I got a 2nd run yesterday and I just chatted with him about his injuries. He has 2 broken vertebrae and a dislocated shoulder, (in his words"all fixable") he was doing @adbrayton a favour by taking his bike to the bottom, he didn't steal it!!!! The rumours are now cleared up and I want to say heal fast Ben, no probs about my re run!! I needed it. Wink Cheers".

I'm so relieved that he's just an idiot and not a bike thief. I was ready to say that he deserved it for stealing a bike.

He's lucky he didn't get any serious head injuries in a fall like that. Adam Brayton confirmed today that he just had a big gash in his leg and that it isn't broken as the rumours have been saying:
'Thanks to everyone for the support! Leg is all good all stitched up and no broken bones. Tree is dead mind. Shout out to Ben McGowan, wish him all the best with his recovery!'

You have to be simlpy mad if you think you can ride a pro-bike without having ever used it and even without any protection. this just stays there to remeber everyone never to act in a stupid way....

Thier suspension is set up so stiff theres no way a casual downhiller could expect to handle it well.

thats nonsense ... slightly stiffer in the damping tunes, but not so much to make them "not rideable for casual downhillers". there is no sense in setting it up super stiff, as traction would be completely gone. tried enough pro bikes, they are just set up perfectly ...... don't know where those super stiff miracles come from.

Depends on the "casual downhiler" really. Most my friends run their forks waay too soft, they almost bottom out when pedalling.
And I think the "super stiff" myth also comes from Gwin, who ran his fork really really stiff (but I'm pretty sure he softened it now)

Ok simple fact. Pro and I mean WC level pros are WAY faster than you! Because of this they hit shit on the trail with much greater speed and force. If they tried to run at race speed with normal squishy DH tunes they'd constantly be bottoming. It's not just Gwin although he is a bit more moto stiff than some. Regardless that's not why Mr. McGowan crashed. Pros were crashing all day. That track was knar.

This video is the all too real metaphor for what would happen if most people rode the same exact thing as the top pros.

The story I got from trackside was that he walking Adam's bike bike down the track but later on was egged on by spectators to ride it, then the brakes were set up opposite to aussie style (left brake back brake) and he reefed on the front brake thinking it was the back brake and went OTB, but from what I see he cased the front wheel into the 2nd stutter and OTB.

When I was walking out the gate after presentations, Cops were turning up maybe to fill out an incident report.

Anyway, helmets work, and only ride DH with a helmet on, end of story. Rest up to both riders!

Makes sense, couple of beers, and a rowdy crowd, lot of people would do the same if you egged them on.

My neck hurts just watching it, poor bastard.
