Good on you not having injurys while not wearing a helmet. Your personal experiences doesnt make it right for everybody. I know noone that had a bad accident while not  securing a seatbelt when driving cars, but still can i understand the fatality of an accident without seatbelts.

Especially as a professional, one should be a rolemodel to youth. Kids copy habits. And there is alot of kids looking up to bmx riders. As a father of two, i would not want them to ride any vehicle without helmets, because they see proffesionals jumping down buildings without helmets.

I used to teach kids riding dirtbikes and had a hard time telling the kids that they need to wear a helmet regardless of how far or long they gonna ride, because adults used to ride their bikes to the washing station without helmets.

Long story short. Yes i get it, each to their own,but i find it incredible stupid.

Another former BMX rider to jump in Smile I‘ve had the similar story riding 20“ bike without helmet but was even more stupid to keep doing that while crashing and having concussions. And I did buy a full face for my first MTB, too Smile

Not trying to justify this, as you fairly say, stupid/bad habit, plus I do have two sons now, so clearly get your point about influence. Below are simply my thoughts around the topic.

The thing with BMX, skateboarding and other street-originated/focused activities is the lifestyle and the habitat. You wear same shit as you do when buying groceries, going on a date or meeting your peers outside. You blend in with the streets. BMX or other tool is a matter of organic interaction with your surroundings. Basically, the „culture“ mentioned by @LePigPen might not be the most accurate reason but I wouldn’t find a better one-word-explanation either. Regardless of how stupid and infantile that seems/is. The helmet fits this equation only once you truly understand your responsibility for yourself and other beings who are dependent on you. Often times that happen once you quit BMX or have a big pause, as I see among many peers.

Culture.

If foreign cultures around the world can stick bones through their nose, worship cows, or marry off children... You can't understand why some people don't wear helmets?

People legit used to just not wear helmets on bikes up until like... The 90s? Maybe early 2000s? (they were only required on the tour de france around 2003-2005)

As a (former) BMXer it's funny cuz... I wore no helmets on any bike, until I got on a mountain bike.

The second I got on a mountain bike I said FUCK this I need a helmet and pads. This shit is dangerous.

I rode BMX for 20+ years. No real injuries until I got older and fatter. Broke my elbow. Was not wearing a helmet during the crash. Never hit my head once in all those years.

I have ridden MTBs for 6 years (almost to the day...)

Since taking up mountain biking I have broken my collarbone (never happened on BMX), broken my back, and had my first concussion.

ALL WITH A HELMET ON. And pads...

Safety is ultimately still about planning. And riding within your limits. A helmet does not absolve you of all injury regardless.

Most of our heroes were wearing a helmet when they got fucked up. (including Scotty Cranmer)

And all these dudes not wearing helmets, ironically, RARELY end up paralyzed or brain damaged. The one major exception, sadly, being Mike Aitken. Who is a trails rider, not street. At least where it happened. So high speed really derails your ability to plan and prepare. Things happen too fast.

When I ride my BMX now I wear a helmet... And MTBing is the reason that is the case.

But it's hard to explain to anyone who is not a BMX rider.

Even at it's peak danger, it's still outrageously more safe than riding road bikes around cars and mountain biking down loose terrain or at high speeds etc.

The amount of repetition these guys have makes them masters at planning and preparation, even when they are stoner high school dropouts.

None of my friends riding BMX got injured the way MTBers do.

tl;dr nah, you gotta read it. don't care if it's long lol. ask and ye shall receive.

At what point did I say I agree with people doing it?

At what point did I say I think it is smart?

This is the problem with the helmet convo and why I always end up deleting my answer and not even bothering.

Somebody asked a question and got an answer. It's not a 'moral high ground competition'.

Everybody here is in agreeance that helmets should be worn. Everyone, including me.

Also in case you didn't read my post because it was too long. I wear helmets now regardless of bike.

So you're shaking your fist at the sky, sorry.

Your reply seems to be directed at someone else who is 'justifying' no helmet culture and or actively supporting that. You'll have to tell me where that guy is. I'll happily talk to him for you...

Relax my man. You answering my post by by comparing it to what tribes do as cultural thing followed by arguments how this is still safer than alot other bike related sports made it come acros as you were actually defending that said bmx culture. Apologies if i made a wrong consumption there.

Ya I did read the whole post, so i was aware that you are wearing a helmet.

I wave my fist more against the bmx industries if any.

I didn't even realize you were the one who originally asked.

Imagine asking a question, not liking the answer, and then using it as an opportunity to remind everyone how reasonable you are compared to these people you don't understand.

If it's a rhetorical question, feel free to let us know lol.

I don't think BMXers should ride without helmets either.

I just can't stress enough how much safer BMX is than MTBing. And how the top guys are basically crazy. The same kind of crazy that allows Adolf to throw a double backie at Rampage, regardless of equipment worn. (gun to my head id rather ride bmx with no helmet than do any of that stuff)

The really interesting thing is watching Dennis Enarson. You will often see him ride with or without a helmet depending on what he's doing. Helmet for dead man stuff. No helmet for street lines that are low speed, low impact.

So to some extent it's literally that nuanced. It's beyond just always helmet or never helmet. At one point in my life I did a similar thing. Helmet for concrete bowls and no helmet for street. Just cuz it was so abundantly clear the concrete bowl is very fast and I have little control over the consequences of a mistake. Whereas street you usually feel any mistake coming and know to roll out of it, bail, etc.

If you're still struggling, look into the Isle of Man TT. Try to wrap your head around that lol. I'll take helmet-less BMX 365 days of the year over ever putting a leg over a piss missile bike, let alone on roads like that.

The embed function is wigging out. I would post in the trials thread but then no one would see it. I wonder if Mike from the Sunday vid took at least a little inspiration from this dude.

Dan Foley’s ASMR solo style is so satisfying to watch. Such a mad dog.
