10/11/2024 12:06pm Dogma persists where there are barriers to freely exchanged information, right? When an insider working on the design and manufacturing side says ‘test’ it seems to me to mean something different from when anyone working the marketing and media side says it. And before you leap to the idea that i’m dragging the bike testers and youtubers for displaying a...

10/2/2024 9:47am I think that's awesome! What a great change in the tone of this conversation. My name's Matt and I like mountain bikes too -- pleasure to meet you. You don't need to know this because the substance of the argument is already laid out, and I don't think the messenger is something we should pay so much attention to. But...

10/1/2024 2:30pm But snfoithat, you say, ride height is a fundamental -- it impacts steering angle, trail, available travel -- we know it's important! Sure, provisionally let's say instantaneous ride height at the initiation of some feature matters. I'm on board. Let's take the example of a sweet right hand corner. The problem is that mean ride height means f-all. It is...

10/1/2024 9:14am Y'all are making my point for me. No one is seeing raw data. If you don't understand how a mean is calculated beyond what you learned in primary school (summation x1, x2...xn) / n, and how meaning (ha ha) is made from it, then that could be a profitable place to start. If you don't understand how a given visualization...

9/26/2024 10:18am Every time suspension/brake/drivetrain data acquisition comes up in mtb media there's a discussion of the hardware. Engineers, I'm sure you're valuable and wonderful people. But just for a minute accept the premise that these systems are 100% accurate. The first question raised by anyone looking at these data should be "So what?" How, and under what circumstances, do these data...
Snfoilhat Added a reply to Your Thoughts on the Cost of a New Mountain Bike?
9/25/2024 2:48pm Age: not to argue, but the truth of that could be pretty easily gotten at by, like, looking at the ages of the survey respondents, rather than sneaked up on by inference from social media network and format preferences

9/25/2024 10:02am There appear to be some big shifts at both ends of the income scale across time. That’s interesting. It adds another dimension to wrangle when trying to interpret the data. Do changes in the answers over time suggest changing attitudes+choices or do they suggest the survey reaching different people whose trajectory over time we can’t get much insight into. Edit...

8/29/2024 1:28pm On the subject of private testing, I have to give Leatt a lot of credit there. They actually publish test reports and whitepapers for a lot of their products. If they claim a product passes a test above the norm, they almost always have a test report you can read. For example, their 6.5 goggles pass military ballistic impact test requirements. Leatt has the test report linked on the product page for anyone to read.

8/29/2024 9:32am I hope one of the larger mountain bike organizations will invest in this space. Everyone in the industry will have some kind of conflict of interest or mismatch of the particular staffing and skills to answer these questions as well as possible, but there is plenty of opportunity to improve on where we are now. It may be counterintuitive, but...

8/23/2024 11:30am Let me give my best anti-science pitch and anyone can decide the merits for themselves. You raise excellent questions and I like the example of the serious article based on rigorous experimentation, so I'll use your idea. If we want to tell a story that is true to the best of our knowledge about bike weight (how much, where on...

8/22/2024 9:32am "[S]ame watts..." Here's one problem that the mtb science scene has struggled with (and that some media people who should have known better have spread misinformation around). How do we measure effort? Given some riding challenge, which of two different setups lets the rider complete the challenge with less effort? Or controlling for effort, which of two different setups gets...
