rockies_alpine Added a reply to Poll: Electric shifting vs mechanical shifting
7/29/2024 10:16am I still view drivetrains as practically disposable as tires, so keeping the cost low is paramount. They have to just work well and not cost a lot, because as soon as you install a drivetrain and use it, it's wearing out and you're saving for the next one. This is going to keep me in 12spd Shimano and away from...

rockies_alpine Added a reply to Not Mechanical, Not for Aftermarket Purchase - SRAM Launches S-1000 Eagle Transmission
7/3/2024 6:00am This feels like it's aimed at lower end OEM e-bike market, so OEM can buy an entire SRAM/RS package at a lower price. The 12sp HG body cassette is the most interesting part.

6/30/2024 8:17pm I am still running an original Rimpact insert (which is quite light) to try to save my rear WAO Union. I am amazed the shit kicking and hits these WAO rims have taken. Even though aluminium is cool again, I'm very tempted by staying with carbon forever for the legit lazy factor of never spending any hours over last two...

6/24/2024 8:17am Re: Specialized tires, I have been running them frequently last 2 years due to the local Maxxis gouge + screw pricing structure, and because they go on sale more often. I really like Butcher T9 Trail front + Eliminator T7/9 Gravity rear for everyday enduro trail riding and racing. Eliminator is the tire I always wanted the Dissector to be...
rockies_alpine Added a reply to Poll: lift kit for Toyota Matrix station wagon?
4/17/2024 3:14pm My Forester does drive more like a truck in a straight line with the lift it has: 1.5" Primitive brand - combination of lifted King Springs on KYBs + body spacers. If you think of it as "sporty" rather than trucky because a Vibe or Forester is more of a car, it's easier to accept. Fun handling and less body...
rockies_alpine Added a reply to Poll: lift kit for Toyota Matrix station wagon?
4/15/2024 5:35pm Out of all the weirdo lifted vehicles used for MTB that I know and hang out with (2015 Forester, mid 2010s RAV4, late 2000s Highlander, diesel Jetta Wagon, Honda Fit), the most successful ones lift and stiffen. The Forester absolutely crushes gravel and washboard with stiffer suspension, when loaded with bikes and people.
rockies_alpine Added a reply to Slopestyle Riders Boycott Crankworx Rotorua Because of Low Prize Pay, Lack of Appearance Fee
3/28/2024 3:22pm Maybe the more apt comparison is MTB slopestyle to winter moguls, aerials or winter slopestyle. Do the skiers get paid to show up? Maybe there's more support from their national federations for travel and training due to some of those being Olympic-level sports. I am not trying to argue against the slopestyle guys and gals, or MTB pros getting paid...
rockies_alpine Added a reply to Slopestyle Riders Boycott Crankworx Rotorua Because of Low Prize Pay, Lack of Appearance Fee
3/22/2024 8:06pm If the fans are paying a gate fee, the riders should be getting paid at a minimum to show up. Like every other stick and ball sport with a paid venue. The lowest level MLS guys and CFL guys doing it for the "love of the game" with small niche audiences are still getting enough salary to pay rent, even...

3/22/2024 7:56pm BLine owner has been very transparent with his operating costs during last several months in his pitches to the community for sponsorship and membership. Non-profit model is probably the best way to do it locally here (or just a smaller facility), but he doesn't have the time or money to keep floating it while the city figures out it's end...

3/13/2024 8:22pm Our local indoor bike park BLine in Calgary is done. Closing April 30th. COVID killed their membership numbers, which never fully rebounded, and they are getting owned by the hot commercial real estate market and rising rents. You'd think it would have been a reasonably profitable place considering we have 4-6 months of legitimate off-season, but here we are.
rockies_alpine Added a reply to Do pros remove their hardware post surgery? (Also, did you?)
2/1/2024 2:26pm Buddy had classic boot top tib-fib spiral fracture from a skiing incident, and had the hardware removed couple years after because he had issues with it causing pain and rubbing inside his boots.

1/30/2024 12:03pm I love centerlock. The problem is those assholes have developed multiple different types of centerlock, and different centerlock tools for each type of scenario they shoehorned it into. Now I'm the proud owner of multiple tools for the same damn thing.

1/23/2024 8:22pm The admittedly unclear implication was that “we” derailed the thread and I neither endorsed unsanctioned trails nor demonized them. I just gave us a new place to argue about it. I am keenly aware of and sensitive to the potential for unsanctioned trails to impact legal access. I more took issue with the term eco-crimes and the idea that these trails cause any more meaningful damage than legal trails which seemed a bit extreme in the grand scheme of the late capitalist human shitshow. I will say that the original sin of American MTB occurred in a place where to...

rockies_alpine Added a comment about product review Era V2.1
1/23/2024 10:29am I have a V2 that came on a used bike, and it destroyed my forearms in 2023 with its overdamped compression tune. Tried many different things - tuned around recommended settings for a long time, then ran drastically different pressure ratios. Tried minimal compression. Came to the conclusion the V2 always felt overdamped. Considering the price of upgrades, I just went with a different fork altogether.

1/2/2024 9:06pm Fine, I'll bite. So I own a Forbidden Dreadnought and I also own the cascade link for the dreadnought. It is a well made product that feels and look like a quality part. It fit perfectly, and with a bit of help from Pinner machine shop, it worked great with my EXT. So props to cascade for the great part. 10/10. Is this part still on my bike? No. Would I recommend it to other dreadnought owners? Probably not. I actually feel like the link made the first 2/3rds of my travel amazing, like seriously the best I've ever felt...

1/2/2024 4:00pm It's a hard product to criticize. You could legitimately criticize it based on fit + finish or quality (which seems great), but at the end of the day it's a chunk of aluminum adjusting kinematics and leverage ratio. Either it works for your abilities, shock, and riding style or it doesn't. It seems like everyone on the Forbidden Facebook group...

12/30/2023 5:33am I think marketers in the bike industry are lazy or bad. To sell a product you need first to bring brand awareness but you also need to prove your value proposition. Influencers do a good job of bringing eyeballs to a product and it's easily quantifiable which makes the marketer's job easier but do they prove the value of the product.. for the most part, no they don't. At the opposite the racer excell at proving the value of a product.. is it easy to measure?.. not as much... I hope at some point brands will realize if they just...

11/18/2023 5:49am As a V1 owner, they can redesign the shock tunnel and linkage like the V2 Druid so it doesn't eat rocks and crack itself. I'm just glad there's experienced guys locally that can repair carbon fibre holes. Better frame storage and polishing up the little "newer bike company" type design issues would be amazing. If it's a bigger version of...
rockies_alpine Added a reply to DH's Potential for Mass Viewership Outside of MTB Participants
10/11/2023 2:46pm High level DH racing as a sport is more akin to world cup alpine downhill ski racing than all these other sports it's compared to (F1, moto-whatever) in my opinion, and can maybe get to that eventual level. It's not all that relatable to the public at a high level, requires a high level of technology, money and training, but...
