Tallboy is a beloved bike but I found it to be not quite what I was looking for. I had mine built up with an overforked Fox 36. The result was a 120mm bike that was barely better on the uphills and definitely worse on the downhills than my 150mm bike. I had a Transition Sentinel and Santa Cruz Tallboy in stable at the time and going back and forth between the two was pointless. The Sentinel was only slightly heavier and substantially better on the downs. Not to say the Tallboy is a bad bike but for my skills...

2/18/2026 3:02pm Sb120 LR gets my vote. Im in the same position. I have an All-Mountain HT V4. Need a rapid 120 bike and DH rig on either side of it. Tallboy is a top option all around - leaning more descent focus in the category. It's also being replaced this spring(think full 29 5010) Geometry and efficiency the SB120 takes it...

I appreciated the mechanical advantage 175mm cranks have, but prefer the smaller and more consistent circle of the 160s. Injuries and age also pushed me towards short cranks. And they do feel appropriate to the overall burly build of my HT.

Turns out dead on with 160mm cranks. I mean absolutely bang on! The post is slammed as far as it can go, and the saddle is EXACTLY where I need it, match made in heaven!

I haven't had a chance to try those, the Br4ve, or 612s. They all look sweet/unique in their own way but I haven't had a chance to feel or use any of them, kinda ran out of steam combined with neuropathy in my arms cutting down riding time significantly.

I'll pre-empt the inevitable butthurt about the below by saying that all of these options are good. They are all powerful, all reasonably easy enough to work on, and all (mostly) consistent. I mainly say that because people adore Saints and I found them to be the weaker in almost every category compared to others, but still good. I'd also caveat that "power" is somewhat misunderstood IMO. Most people don't have the means to measure overall, total available power, rather they base it on how the brakes feel. A brake like the Maximas may have a ton of overall power...
