Overheard this from a friend, I do not support or condone his analogy: [i]There are some, not all, that feel as if MTBing is/was a private club...access to that exclusive club has been money, trails, time and most of all; some fitness and a mindset to dig in to your depths of psych to test your mind and body to get to the top of the mountain. In that last point, there is ego, narcissism, addiction, etc....(again, for some, not all) and with the assist bikes, you have removed the last point I mentioned and the members of the exclusive...

I need to correct you on bit above: we can all agree that every team needs a Masters. As in Wyn Masters or Eddie Masters. Imagine if every team had a person like that, the world would be a better place. We all know that. It is an obvious thing. Masters of us puppets, keep pulling our striiiiiings! Smile Mx

And a majority of the men who are racing are working a day job... Funny thing .. All these attempts to make everything equal haven't brought up the participation levels... Payouts are the same, yet the number of female racers hasn't changed dramatically... It would be interesting if we could see the percentage of women racers vs women who ride and compare that same percentage to the men... I suspect that a similar percentage of men race vs. ride but there is still more men that ride.. Equal payouts only affect a small number of people.

I am not shocked, i've heard nuttier ideas. We shouldn't force teams to sign anyone, there are about 30 registered trade teams in the UCI, there are women on I think 14 of those teams, so almost half of the teams have recognized the benefits of having women on their programs. I am co-team manager for SRAM TLD RACING, Vali Holl's race program and these benefits aren't just to practice some moral licensing, it is because she is very marketable, very good with product development, insane to watch on a bike, fun to be around and has a growing and...

From what I've seen, there are less women racing at the world cup level because there are less women racing at the local level. I participated in a race that was called the "Trail Bike Downhill." Think of it as a one stage enduro, before the EWS existed. As long as your bike was not a full blown DH race rig, you could enter. There were 35-40 total participants across a number of classes. Less than 5 of them were women. I also took a mountain biking class in college and only one third of the class were women, and...

why the hell should it be mandatory? if it would be coll to see more girls race? yes, but it never should be mandatory for a team to have a girl as it is not for any other class. there simply aren't as many girls interested in racing/riding as there is guys, nor is the field as competitive, percentage wise the 1 to 10 girl time diference in a wc is equal to 1 to 60 guy

I am surprised this hasn't been said earlier, as this is one of the more interesting parts in the history of our still young sport; how the top marketable athlete at the time used whatever he had handy (in this case a borrowed sharpie) as leverage in a contract negotiation. I mean, we are still talking about it exactly 21 years later; that's quite some power in a sharpie! Wink I would really like to find out if it's true that Fox ended up paying him more than he initially asked or if that is only folklore... And I do...

Palmer did one race in jeans...I would know, I gave him my sharpie to mark them up with specialized logos, and he wore them to make a point, not because they were awesome. His point being; "one dude changed the whole game, and got everyone in moto pants, me".

Whoa. First off, that's a goober statement. I've been in DH since day 1. We went from wearing all spandex to trials riders getting us into Hammer lower leg neoprene mega-thick "pads" to JT Racing adding rubbery knee "pads" to a set of knee warmers to motocross pants with massive welded logos as "pads" with shin pads underneath to cut motocross pants with Dainese bibs under them to skate style knee pads under moto pants to suddenly pre-cut moto style DH shorts with Kyle Strait pads and/or Dainese "now separate" knee pads to legit DH shorts without all the pads...

What's in it for a gear brand to partner with a guy that has basically said 'race pants' are not good?

Racers are only hurting themselves, and keeping their values lowered by keeping it in the secret. This is why the companies will even have it in the contract that they can not discuss it. This is just as much a problem in the buisness world as it is in the racing world. There is no reason to keep salaries quite, except to help the companies.

If you think about it, that is it for them moving teams now. Only if the company fails will be see the Athertons on another brand. Otherwise if they do move and keep Atherton Bikes going, it shows they don't have confidence in their own product. So this is their bike brand until they retire. #HowManySeasonsLeftRumors
