He almost certainly doesn't ride a link. Sponsored riders have agreements with their brands that prevent them from running a link. We have had less prominent racers ask us if we would help them out with a link only to come back a bit later letting us know they got told no.

The other thing I find with the terrain around Washington and other parts of the PNW is the roots are a fairly unique type of small bump where the impact frequency is super high but also super low amplitude. Then you have the high speed hucks that are always a single impact and very high amplitude. Balancing those two can be tricky and a fair bit of progression helps the shock stay active on the super high frequency stuff while not slapping bottom on the hucks. One odd thing with the Oso... 155mm of travel with a 60mm stroke shock and 170mm of travel with a 65mm stroke shock would mean that last 5mm of shock stroke has an average leverage ratio of 3. There's definitely not a one size fits all for kinematics. For an average rider making it harder to bottom out might make it so they never use the last 10mm of travel or have to run excessive amounts of sag. For a more aggressive rider the kinematics that work for the average rider lead to over springing the bike and running less sag, slapping bottom often and hard, or running an excessively stiff damping tune. Finding a bike with a leverage curve that gets you the balance of spring rate and damping that you want is important. I don't think...

Yeah this pretty much sums it up. The swing link has less mechanical advantage over the master cylinder initially and then ramps towards more mechanical advantage. That allows the bit of lever stroke that closes up the gap between the pads and the rotor to be relatively short. If you over fill the lever to make the brakes touchier then you end up with something that 1. needs to be maintained or the feel will go away and 2. is primarily in the portion of lever throw where the swing link has less mechanical advantage. As long as you reset the pistons/bleed to a block thicker than your rotor and pads, it doesn't matter how thick your rotors are. Lever throw will be the same. The only time thicker rotors decrease lever throw is if you just swap a thin rotor for a thicker one and do nothing else. This is effectively the same as over filling your brakes so it eventually goes away.

It's just another hurdle to install something. Part of the idea with those calipers was to have as much cross compatibility as possible. It turns into an even more expensive pain really quick. Well yeah there's the booster too, but if you had the pads retract it would be absolutely horrendous braking. You can also stop most regular vehicles without the booster though. Provided that does involve a whole lot of standing on the brake pedal. Cams are super easy to do with really tight tolerances. It's all in the same set up.

Yeah it's still a custom tool even for two piece calipers. Conveniently it's an angle that taper mills exist in so it's just a matter of getting most of the upper portion of the flutes ground off so that it can undercut. With a single piece caliper it would have to be a ground down dovetail or something entirely custom...

Re machining calipers, - piston seal groove geometry is interesting. They are not square. About a 7deg taper on the outer surface. The top edge usually has a shallow angle chamfer to help control how the seal flexes outward. On a single piece caliper you'd need two different tools to cut the grooves. One for each side.
