Because I’m a fabricator and building your own stuff is cooler than buying it.

I think the perceived smoothness of heavier vehicles more comes down to the weight of sprung mass compared to the weight of the rider/driver more than anything. You and your bike a plenty heavy and exert plenty of force in compression to not get bump jumped by even a heavy wheel assuming the suspension and tire pressure is reasonable and of course not wheels that are obscenely heavy. Obviously at some point they would become heavy enough to be an issue. The forces exerted by the suspension are also largely vertical so they do little to take away from horizontal...

@Digit Bikes great post, really appreciate you sharing this! As to the Felt question, I honestly can't tell you. Robot might have a better feel, but outside the Felt acquisition by Pierer Mobility during COVID, I don't have a ton of insight into how big they were. @ebikepartyshirt, CAST Touring and SNDR Products (different brands, same company, technically). We're in the process of building a new manufacturing facility here in the Tetons, which has me banging nails (or rather, driving metal screws) a lot of my day until this thing is dried in (see, I do "real work" too sometimes...)...

I think the fact we're having this conversation at all is proof enough... But I do largely agree with you. It's not a feeling that I have, but I've been the salesperson on the shop floor and dealt with the consumer impression firsthand. We must remember that we, bike-obsessed forum dwellers, represent a minuscule percentage of the bike market as...

Personally I was a bit surprised that the "AF" series of bikes ended up being priced as competitively as they were, in Canada they've always been up there with Yeti and Santa Cruz pricing for comparable models.

They do, which I think has actually severely impacted their image and position within the high-end market negatively. It has two problems; they have specced them (largely) as lower-end models, which has devalued their higher-end carbon models and brand as a whole, leading to the question we are currently discussing. People who buy a Ripmo AF with Deore do not...

Ibis has always been a boutique brand. Their frames are made in the same Vietnamese production facility as Yeti; they are very direct competitors. Almost as direct as you can be.
I'm a bit late to the party here, and not coaching elite Dh racers, though some of my former riders have gone on to race at that level... One of the big reasons for higher bar height/stack becoming popular is overall speeds have increased. Most riders adapt to a setup and run it mostly the same, but change minor details...

Welcome to the wild and wonderful world of the bike industry, where you get worked to death and paid next to nothing, but there are literal piles of new and lightly used parts, even parts falling out the cracks of the building. What parts are you running? Whatever's in the pile. At least until you get laid off next week.

Loving the idea you guys think you know more than the dude who literally makes his living from sponsorships and has actually negotiated a contract. But yeana yea, you're probably right. Everyone's just lying to you for fun.

" why do bike companies spec such short dropper posts on their bikes?” Brands have to spec a post that functions when fully inserted, or else folks will fully insert it, have it not work, and complain. Maybe attempt to sue them when it comes up while riding, and they get hurt. Thank your local Lawyers. So they have to...

Shout out big privilege, he's a good dude. Always up at mountain creek, just a normal dude that likes riding bikes (with a rap career). I love that it he brings representation for a minority in our sport.

The Dakar Rally (and a few others) has an electric class. So no, Trophy trucks are not the E-bikes of motorsport, they have their own electric versions already. If anything Trophy trucks are like the Enduro MTB's of real pros Vs. the Bros who think they're pros set up. Remember the gasps of horror and disbelief when they did that...
They are also substantially bigger than you'd think. The track width of a 6100 truck is usually about 92 inches, a stock '23 Raptor is 74" inches. (The widest year) and a new Tacoma is only 63". Trophy trucks are a strange breed, they could be substantially lighter if they wanted but it's actually slower. Look at Ultra 4 4400...

I still ride toe clips on my track bike... but I'm also stuck in the 2005 era messenger fad. Yes, I have a chrome bag and stretched ears. Yes, I was a messenger. No, I didn't make more than minimum wage doing it.

The Forbidden one is not a Sram product, it's their own design. Similar in appearance, but not the same. Lots of companies make a bolt-on mount like this. I'd be stoked to see a UBM, UDH is one of the best "standards" in a long time. Misaligned shitty post mounts that aren't replaceable need to die. I want to be...

i think part of it is also people getting in over their heads, overestimating their abilities. at my local bike park I routinely see this occur. there was one incident this fall I was riding the lift, witnessed a guy go over the bars, lawn dart himself and not move. it wasn't a particularly difficult trail either. i told the lift attendants as soon as I unloaded, but thankfully the guy was riding with some other people. i caught up with one of the patrol guys later in the day, sounds like the guy thankfully only had a concussion. but...
