Agree on the pad issue. Not switching them all to metalic pads seems very odd. I'm far from the most experienced rider but if someone asked me to do a "break comparison" i'd be putting same sized rotor and pads on everything.

Some real strange testing protocols, the main one being testing Hayes with semi-metallic, Shimano with resin and the rest with metallic. You'd think you'd go through all that trouble of using Brake-Ace to draw measurable comparisons you'd at the least run the same ballpark compound (Hayes even includes metallic pads in the box, Shimano metallic pads are easily had). Ideally you'd have just gotten a pair Galfer/Sinter/MTX pads for all brakes where possible. Not sure how the Hayes brakes gets a 7 for bleed procedure. It has literally the same bleed procedure as SRAM (to the point where I use...

Thanks for the test, although I strongly disagree with the fact that the XTR offer "Light lever feel with a gradual build in power = excellent braking control and modulation". Actually, it's the opposite in my experience. The XTR are quite on/off brakes (not as much as the Saint, but still). Actually, they offer far less modulation than the MT7, which I've been using for several years on different bikes. Also, your test does not touch base on the reliability of those systems. Even though I'm a big Magura fan, I could not stand the recurring and unpredictable losses of...

World class review guys, that was great! I had the Maguras and the HC3 lever makes a huge difference, their stock carbotech lever are so mediocre a nd break easily. Currently have Dominions A4 and are super happy with them as well.

Being I'm sick (and bored) I wanted to add a few more thoughts. 1) Anyone looking for raw data, its already been done and the link is posted here. Zee Germans live up to the stereotype and absolutely crushed it if you care about being completely quantitative with respect to a brake test. 2) The real reason I read reviews on Vital is because guys like Jason are legitimately fast, ask a lot out of their equipment and frankly have great taste. Its like reading a review of a restaurant from a food critic you jive with. While adding some...

Thanks for the explanation. In a different use case--e.g. XC/marathon--could there be more to gain from a system that firms up the fork?

Good question! FLOAT X and DHX Live Valve Neo shocks were designed for the application of Trail and All-Mountain riding, where transitions are extremely quick, and in some cases quite jarring. The overwhelming majority of on-trail efficiency which can be achieved from firm suspension is attributable to the rear shock, and any delay in the Opening of a fork’s compression circuit— even 1/70th of a second—would be noticeable to riders. The insignificant gains in speed efficiency offered by a firm fork are not worth the sacrifice in on-trail performance for the Trail and All-Mountain disciplines.
