Too Good to be True? $6,799 Amflow PR Carbon Pro Review
Rating:
Vital Review
AmflowPRCarbonProA2

Would Vital's thoughts of the $6,799 Amflow PR Carbon Pro line up with all the incredibly positive reviews out there? We spent a few months on this new eMTB in a variety of locations to find out.

What Vital Liked

  • The Avinox M2s drive unit has more power than any eMTBer will ever need, so regular riding leaves plenty in reserve. We only ever used the 150nm/1500w Boost function as a novelty and don't see a legitimate use case for so much power and speed short of escaping a mountain lion, bear or angry forum member.
  • The host of software features to control the power, tune the ride experience and manage efficiency is impressive. Traction control, Hill Start, Apple Find My integration, Smart Heart Rate control are just a few.
  • Very quiet motor noise both climbing and descending. We did not experience any motor rattle like some users have reported.
  • Over-run power without the ratcheting noise of a Bosch.
  • Easily removable and swappable 800Wh battery.
  • SRAM Transmission S1000 drivetrain has been crisp, quiet and trouble-free. Avinox SmoothShift (shifting while coasting) is a feature we've ground fond of over time.
  • Magura  Gustav Pro brakes and Schwalbe radial gravity tires are durable and perform well.
  • The light seems kind of kooky, but is incredibly handy when needed. We just kept it on the bike. Removing it will require dipping in behind the display to disconnect the wire.
  • Price is very hard to beat.

What Vital Didn't Like

  • Our size medium shock rebound was at full slow despite rider weights of only 170-pounds. Heavier riders needing more spring pressure would have rebound that was too fast (at least with the shock tune on our bike).
  • Our size medium barely fits a standard water bottle. The bottle touches the frame and Float X shock reservoir. This made inserting the bottle while riding trickier than normal.
  • The accessory mount on the top tube did not come with bolts. Limited space will cause you to leave some accessories at home once you do get bolts for it (like our OneUp pump).
  • Ditch the grips immediately.
  • Large 38t chainring is exposed without protection.
  • Tubeless valve stems were not included despite charger adapters for every country on planet earth.
  • On the heavy side at 53.5 pounds with our Deity Deftrap pedals.

Would We Buy It?

Would we spend our own money on the Amflow PR Carbon Pro? At $6,799, yes, we would. The shortcomings we experienced are pretty trivial compared to the overall performance, adjustability and capability of this full-powered bike. If there ever was a bike with great bones and a future for upgrading, the PR Carbon Pro seems like the one. Assuming the shock tune on every medium is like ours, getting the Float X re-tuned would be the only mandatory fix for riders over 170-175 pounds (unless your preferred rebound setting is "pogo stick"). The gravity-oriented tires and brakes may be chunky but they're standout pieces of spec that served the bike's 53-pound heft well on the trail. All of the house-brand parts have fulfilled their duties without complaints.

Side note: After riding the PR Carbon Pro, the $4,999 Amflow PR Carbon looks like a very compelling contender for the new-to-seasoned intermediate rider focused on cruisy flow trails or experiences that don't include many rowdy or steep decents. The suspension and brakes are lighter duty, but it uses the same SRAM S1000 drivetrain as the PR Carbon Pro to unlock the awesome drive system features. Sure, you only get the Avinox M2 motor instead of the M2S, but like we said, we rarely tapped into the absolute power of the M2S, so there should be more than enough on tap at 115Nm (125nm peak) and 1100w of peak power with the M2. Decisions, decisions.
