Maxxis New Bubble Casing?

Edited Date/Time 1/8/2022 8:42am
Brand new DHR2 DH casing. Doesn’t want to hold air. I can wipe saliva anywhere on the sidewall and it starts bubbling up. A dud or will sealant eventually seal it up? It’s not like it’s a few spots, it’s literally the whole sidewall both sides and really bad where there’s the embossed writing on the tire.

Probably normal and is likely just some sealant coming out with air. Pump up to a high pressure, say 30 even 40+ and go ride around the neighborhood. Should be good to go after that.

Does the hot patch have a TR on it (for tubeless ready). I doubt they produce non TR version anymore, but perhaps you got some new old stock or something? I also don't know if the TR is actually made any different. Just curious.

I have had the same problem with a pair of wtb vigilante. Found someone who had the same problem at a Norwegian forum, and the problem was that some batches have some sort of silicone on the inside from the factory. They did. Ot hold air, and looked like yours. I had to take them of and clean with iso alkohol to get the layer of. That worked. It seems still to leak some places, but it is not going flat in a day, like it did.

depends on the wheel size.

per the maxxis website, all versions of the 29" DHR2 are TR.

All the 27.5 DHR2 are TR, with the exception of the older 3C and ST (super tacky) compounds, which are also both wire beads (and are also the WT designation for Wide Trail for 35mm rims)

the only 26" DHR2s that are available TR are the EXO casing.

This also appears to be the case with the DHF.

i have some old 26" DH casing DHFs that do the same thing, and are not TR (ie weep sealant the entire way around). there's an in-molded texture on the bead that prevents it from sealing. and also a spot of in-molded text where the leaking is particularly bad.

Not ideal, but remember, your sealant is advertised as being able to seal a 1/4'' hole.... if it can' seal a hole that's 1/1000th of an inch, that's a sealant problem too. It's a slightly porous casing for whatever reason, I must have had this a dozen times... throw some Orange Seal in there and it will be instantly fixed.

Tire is a 29 3C DH Maxxgrip TR DHR2. I've got about 90ml of stans in there since I seated it. Pumped it up to 40 psi three times, spun it around and it's deflated each time. The bead is seated fine. It just seems the sidewall are so incredibly porous that it won't hold air.

Not to steal the spotlight here, but since we're on the subject of Maxxis tires, is anyone else having issues with premature tearing of sidewalls this year, specifically right at the bead?

Try cleaning them out, and repeat the process. I think there is something that is to slippy for the sealant to do its job.

Okay, I've given the inside a wash with soapy water and then a wipe with iso. Was still bubbling away on re-inflation with Stans inside. Will see if it's still inflated in the morning.

if it's still not holding air, i'd maybe try a different sealant if you have any, beyond that it sounds like it might be a warranty issue.

More sealant has always solved this same issue with Maxxis tires (on non tubeless ready tires). Tires would leak and go flat until I put some more squirts of sealant in them. Good quality sealant makes a difference too, the cheaper stuff is diluted too much.

I’ve had this happen with lots of tyres (mainly Maxxis as that’s what I nearly always run) and it should seal eventually. As said above, cleaning the insides usually helps but I find a lot of Maxxis tyres do this at first.

Happened to one out of four of my dhr2 dh casing too. After a few rides It now holds air but will still deflate faster overtime than the assegai dh casing it's paired with.

Just happened to me again last weekend and had a bunch of others say it's been happening to them lately as well. Not sure what to make of it... Ended up buying an EXO+ DHRII and am going to see if it happens again. If it does, it might be time for me to jump ship and see what else is out there.

The EXO+ tires that came on my Megatower would go flat after a couple of hours due to seeping sidewalls. Kept adding extra sealant, over inflating and trying to ride them and they would go soft during rides for me. After a week of this I had them warrantied and my next set seated and held air consistently from day one.
