This! I watched that one live. I was so stoked before the rock garden get off cause I thought we were watching Sam take rainbow one more time. Course then you had rat right after as well.

So famous people forgot it was actually 3rd?! He did crash in the run too....I think it was Clay Porters video that year which has the footage (ie filming the trackside video screen). I rate this one near the top considering how stacked against him the conditions were. I believe the next fastest rider in the same conditions was (THE LEGEND) Mickael Pascal about 27 seconds back! VDS was insane but I put the Champery one above it Agree with Neko's chainless run AND his run at Cairns where he crashed but still ended up 3rd or 4th? Peaty at...

Lots of good answers and good (bad?) memories as well. Also want to throw in Mick Hannah's worlds run in Cairns. Obviously no crash, he just didn't quite have the speed. But what a moment that would have been for him. And then Tracy also missing out on the top step because she KO'd herself and even after being knocked out after the crash came in second as well.

Kovarik....14 seconds at Ft. Bill. He was the best racer on the planet at the time. Just wasn't caught on video. I've seen most of the greats in person & Kovarik before his injury was to DH what Ricky Carmichael was to Moto. Untouchable. Really wish there better footage of the races of that time. We have videos with pieced together clips, but not race runs unfolding to tell the real story.

Did your friend do any market research prior to 2000, when mtb was regularly on public broadcast tv and much more in the mainstream than today? There's no doubt mtb went through a publicity slump earlier this millennium, but that just made it an undervalued asset ripe for a motivated business to leverage profit off a lesser investment.

Poor definition allows for interpretation. Course: "The entire downhill course must be marked and protected with tape or barriers, using non-metallic, preferably PVC, stakes (slalom stakes) 1.5 to 2 meters high." "Exit" is not defined so riding over a pole could be riding the course (as defined above). Other sports/disciplines rules or personal opinion shouldn't apply. Also worth nothing DQ...

And a 29er takes its first Worlds gold. Very cool racing. Awesome to continue to see the full senior mens and womens fields. Gutted for the Hannah's, especially Mick, a total of .6 seconds away from 2 rainbow jerseys. A couple more cameras would've been nice.

Exactly. While the entire field wasn't stacked like a regular world cup, the top 5 were all the usual suspects and there wasn't anyone away who would seriously challenge for top 5 (especially at Cairns). It was like old times with Sammy on the hot seat and Geeman in the #2 spot
