The barrier of MTB being hard has NOTHING to do with newbs on e-Bikes. When you see some idiot on YouTube buy a new supercar Corvette or Ferrari and then proceed to do a burnout and smash into a curb or wall, do you blame the car? Of course not - you blame the driver (the user). The same goes with eMTB, trail etiquette, etc. If someone hurts themself on a bike, it doesn't matter if it's eMTB or just MTB or BMX or gravel bike or unicycle. And I honestly disagree with the "paying your dues climbing" argument. I...

I too think we agree. I totally understand the differences and similarities between the two. I am fully aware of the hard work, time and energy it takes to be a fit cyclist and truly appreciate it. I'm not out there to cheat anyone and beat them. Just out there having a good time. I am just saying we can co-exist peacefully without tarnishing the others experience. Thanks for your reply.

I don't want to be impolite or rude, but do you really see it as the same when someone chooses the elctrification not by circumstances but by deliberate picking the advantages of elctric-motor-assistence over a regular mtb? To me that is not only about attitude and culture but about benefits. I can ride faster to the trails, i don´t have time for hourlong climbs to get fun descents, i can do multiple laps in the same time, i can go further uphill, i can go steeper, i can ride different uphilltrails, etc. To me that is most logically a different...

Take away the paid part and most pros would ride a different brand or not be able to make a living riding. The e-bike wasn't built to let the average rider win on the world cup, just for us regulars and no so regulars to enjoy riding.

I could go on about how negative and one sided I believe the article to be but don't think that's going to change anything. I approach my rides the same on my e-bike as I did on my mtb, same mindset, same culture for me. The point I was making with snow boarding is that now skiers & boarders share the same mountain and support the same community and industry. They are different yet very very similar sports just as mtb and e-mtb riding (excluding racing of course). I grew up in the bicycle and motorcycle industry my entire working...

Like the idea or not it doesn't exist. No exemptions available at this time. I've explained my situation and why I ride an E bike, the usual reply is they don't care, ride your motorcycle somewhere else (it's not a moto, it's a class 1 ebike).

Right there with you Joe. I'll continue to ride the trails (illegal for E bikes) until they become legal.

I am 78 this year and after 13 surgeries from a climbing incident now have a blue permanent hang tag for the rear view mirror. I can still do almost everything I formerly did but am restricted to the length of time and distance and exertion it takes to do it. I have been avid at MTB since Gary Fisher days. Now I use a CLASS-ONE eMTB to be able to continue enjoying my outdoor life like I did for many years before. In many ways it has saved my life. I am not at all ashamed of owning and...

For an opinion post and one of the more relevant mountainbikesites, and you being a journalist, this article is surprisingly biased. I've been drawn by your headline because I recently had a conversation where my point was just that. E-Mountainbiking is just not the same as traditional biking. Therefore it's a different sport. My point was, that you can't generally share a ride between the two because the physical difference and intend of use of it's owners would be to big. However I've seen and experienced the exception. Sometimes weird - him being soaking wet and out of breathe, while...

A different sport? Sure. Not allowed on the same trails? Come on, really?

I've ridden both and I have no issues with e-bikes getting more people out or allowing people to ride longer. I took my Dad on a pretty serious ride for the first time in years and we BOTH had fun- thanks to an e-mtb for him. Bikes are bikes- and honestly, I think a lot of the hate is blown out of proportion.

Bummer article but what I have come to expect from the mtb community. I've been riding E Bikes for 5 years now and all the hate has come from other mountain bikers. Like Paul I have had the ability to ride a pedal bike taken away and found E Biking to be the replacement. Cheater is one of the nicer things I am now called on the trail. Really, who am I cheating, was I racing someone, did I hide the fact that I was riding an E Bike, did I claim victory. Nope, just went out for a ride...
