Imagine our surprise when Loic is just like The Stig and the buttons actually change the song in his helmet so it plays like DnB on a flowy jump section and 80s montage rock in a pedal section and old school hip hop in the tech to find the flow in the rough. edit: oh that's awkward after watching the video... he literally makes that joke. I am either not that creative or I am as funny/cool as Loic. i'll let the jury decide... :/

This. MTB-only guys don't know the true meaning of "arm pump." I will say I've noticed a lot of low-slung brake levers on bicycles, though. Folks, you are doing yourself no favors with the brakes pointing toward the dirt. Imagine you're going to show off your forearms and want to make yourself look as much like Popeye as you can. What do you do? Clench your fists and bring them inward as close to your elbow as you can, right? Notice how that's almost the same hand position you are making when your brakes are pointed down? Now take a...

If you're going to go full DH casing and you're not worried about pricing/replacing the tire, I'd probably just opt for the maxx grip version. Yeah, it's probably slower, but it's a DH tire. Might as well go for all out grip when the difference in rolling speed is going to be negligible. I know you said you'd already tried...

kcyeeto Added a reply to 170mm 36 vs 38 fork: which would you prefer?

I've ridden Fox 36's, 38's and now I'm on a Zeb. I'm around 150 pounds so I'm probably relatively similar in size to you. I tend to think the newer 38mm forks are really good, regardless of what brand. I think I tend to ride relatively centered on the bike, maybe a little forward and the burlier forks seem to...
Look into the Specialized Cannibals. They're slightly cheaper than other brands and they're the most supportive feeling tire I have ever ridden. Also only made in a 2.4 width and DH casing. Seem to be a good do it all tire with the exception of really deep dirt/mud. I've never ridden the Michelin DH tires but have heard those are...

kcyeeto Added a reply to 2.4 tires for enduro

Specialized Cannibal 2.4 is a really good option. Might be on the heavier side of things given that they only offer it in the full DH casing, but I think its one of the better tires I've ridden.

https://youtu.be/kIxC8Lm0cao?t=117 Seth Sherlock is on an Intense M1 in this video. Isn't he riding on Gwin's team? If you pause it at 1:57 in, looks like the new M1. Not sure if this has been covered or not, but it would make a lot of sense for them to continue racing that bike. Really dig the way that thing looks...

pedalpedalpedal Liked a forum topic Weight vs mobility in dh racing

I’m struggling to understand how cutting weight alone would help loic and other bigger riders gain speed. From what I see, it is not jackson’s lighter weight that makes him fast. It looks like his mobility and flexibility allow the bike to move underneath him. I read people talk about chassis stability and it makes sense that a rider does not want to get thrown, but using strength to smash through obstacles will always cost more energy and speed than a system that can articulate and flex. With jets, super bikes and open wheel racing cars, higher stability always correlates...

I think there is something to the higher weight, less mobility thing, but to me that isn't the major thing that makes Jackson's riding different. The biggest thing I see is Jackson's corner speed on steep terrain, which I put (in part) down to his light weight allowing him to brake later and slow himself down for corners more easily than a heavier rider. Jackson seems to be able to gap into sections, clearing over bumps and holes, and then slow himself down on a dime. A heavier rider like Loic or Minnaar wouldn't be able to brake enough for...

I've been using the newer Specialized Cannibals as front tires for the past year or so. Actually really impressed with the Cannibal as it has unreal grip in most situations and generally seems to wear pretty slowly when compared to a Maxxis max grip. The casing of that tire is way stiffer than their other tires or even Maxxis DH...

Have you tried the enduro as a mullet? I would imagine it would work pretty well for you. I think I'm similar height to you and I can't see myself going back to dual 29ers on anything except a full xc/light trailbike. I didn't realize how much better mullets turn until I set my bike up that way.

I'm running a 40mm stem also. I think I might try a 50. It would be cool to experiment with different chainstay lengths. I'm just conjecturing here but I wonder if the low anti rise and also long CS compared to the reach would cause the bike to pitch forward even more under braking. I realize it's really not the bike but my own skill that is lacking, it's just something fun to think about. I never see any reviews or feedback for smaller bike sizes.

What stem are you running? I'm similar in height to you and currently own an s3 sj evo. I think the reach/chainstay on the evo/enduro are almost identical when paired with a 40MM stem and set in the long/low setting. I tend to think that bikes with longer (440-445) rear centers are easier to corner. I think most of what...

Newmen wheels are really good in terms of dent resistance. I don't think that the hubs were any better than any of the other comparable brands out there, but the rims were really stout. I rode them for a couple of seasons and were the only alloy rims that have never dented. They're not necessarily the most convenient to get...

After they start to get really worn in, they do slip a little bit. Can usually mitigate this a little bit by running a bib and tall socks to keep them in place. But they stay put better than most other knee pads (even ones that have straps). I think he was talking about having back protection in a camelback/hydration...

7IDP Sam Hill knee guards are good. I think they make a light version of them as well, but the full size ones aren't that bad as far as sweat goes. TLD D3 helmet is decent, that's what I've been wearing for a year. The only time I didn't opt for it was when it was 85 or 90 plus...

If it were me, I'd go with an EVO. If the biggest thing for you is comfort on the downs, EVO no questions asked. Obviously there are a million great choices for bikes right now, but out of what you have mentioned, I think that'd be my pick, especially where you're located and your stature. A lot of it is...
