Gonna play devils advocate here: maybe, just maybe, and it’s a big huge probably unlikely maybe, they’re using a Chinese catalog chassis and dropping in some custom engineered internals (better clutch, nicely machined bits inside the shifter, good bearings, etc). Well there's the downside that mopeds aren't allowed on trails that mountain bikers put lots of labor into building, the downside that it's a motorcycle but still has pedals making it the worst of both worlds, and the downside that if you ride one you're an idiot.

Hear me out on this one - depending on the response time of the sensor and data acquisition rate of the phone interface, this could be insanely useful for tuning the dampening characteristics of tire inserts (much like what their shock version does, not that I’ve ever used it). Probably only a matter of time until we have multiple “durometers” of inserts with various compression/rebound rates to really fine tune feel much like tokens in an air shock and clicks of rebound, at which point this tool would really shine. Don’t hate the engineers, hate the product managers. Mavics engineers probably shook their heads when the product manager listed off everything you mentioned as a requirement , muttered “this is silly” then designed it and kept their jobs.
