They used these actually already in 1998 season, but they came available for purchase in 1999 in this spec. Only one was though sold as they were custom fabricated and the price tag was similar to like 8000€ these days 😅 The rear feels very very smooth and rigid (steel frame, steel axles and bronze bushings) but I’ve also serviced one of these after a decade of abuse and the worn bronze bushings had gave a lot of looseness to the rear. The frame designer himself said they should’ve gone for sealed bearings back then

Reminds me of Neko's Frameworks bike. Looks pretty modern for 1999, as long as it isn't too flexy. But it definitely might be too flexy with those pivots, stays, and rear QR. How'd these ride?

Wow, that's cool to hear, big respect for that! The pedals aren't the original ones that's true, but Matti used this Sunline stem during the WC races with this proto level bike. I actually got the stem straight from him. I also got another M9 he used in the last races of the season, which was the first ever M9 coming off the official 'production line', and it has the different 888 with the white lowers and the Marzocchi stem that you mentioned.

Very nice. I built this bike up originally. And it’s almost spot on. Apart from the Penthouse pedals, you need a Marzocchi direct mount stem, but they are very rare these days. I might even still have some blue master cylinder caps for the brakes. Loving it. 👍🏼

I've been restoring old bikes for a long time already, and found this here in Finland forgotten in some guys 'barn'. Many of the parts were replaced, and it was missing some of the original team decals, but I hunted down the original spec parts slowly, drew new decals for it based on old photos, and got some of the missing bit straight from Matti himself. Just glad I got the chance to save this piece of Finnish DH history!

Yes, you’re correct, they used those with these in the original spec. You know your specs! 👏🏻 They also had the Tioga proto saddles on these originally, but they were crap and didn’t last at all so he used this Nukeproof instead

These 1st gen 204s have a standard 135mm hub and 100mm BB shell. The later second gen 204s got the moto style rear end and 165mm hubs

Actually I put this on a fish scale and it showed 18.3kg so about 40 lbs, was way lighter than I first thought!
