AgrAde Added a reply to Modern Geo Talk: Chainstays, Stack, Reach, and Bitching About It

AgrAde Added a reply to Modern Geo Talk: Chainstays, Stack, Reach, and Bitching About It
2/22/2026 9:24am People get angry with you because you ignore other people's opinions. Go watch moimoi test the frameworks enduro bike, discover it's less flickable than he expects, then discover later on that the chainstay is long and that's what he was feeling. It has always meant something that's less stable, more dynamic, more bmxy, and it's weird AF to pretend that...

2/22/2026 2:14am Yep, a part of "flickability" is getting weight on the rear easily and higher bars help with that. We have to remember though that flickability doesn't exist. Sean said so. He has an important opinion here even though he can't actually understand what it even means.

2/22/2026 12:47am where did I mention shralps? Even if it was all about shralps, you mentioned you can't shralp a corner anyway, so how would you know?

2/21/2026 11:56pm Why the fuck did you read my prior comment about what "flickable" means, like it, and then post that? I feel like you ride in a way that doesn't suit a short chainstay bike, you're just not interested in entertaining the idea that other people do, and you don't like that they have words to describe how those bikes ride...

AgrAde Added a reply to Tweener: make a small bike big, or a big bike small
2/19/2026 3:44pm One of my friends has t-rex arms and ended up getting professional help with his on-bike posture/setup/fit. He ended up on a wild Dak-style setup with ~80mm risers on his enduro bike and said it was like night and day, didn't realise how unbalanced he was or how limited his movement on the bike was. I really don't like how...

2/19/2026 1:13am One thing that i don't think has been mentioned is that a longer chainstay can help make a bike feel smaller if you've sized up, in certain ways. If you don't need to lean forward onto your bars as much to get the right amount of weight onto the front wheel, then you can get away with a shorter stem/more...

AgrAde Added a reply to Is It 4 Bar?
2/18/2026 11:24pm Personally I don't bother with 4 bars. I just find one good one with cheap jugs and stay there until it's time to go home. If they serve crab then it's definitely a bonus. Gotta get messy when you're getting messy.

2/18/2026 11:05pm My point isn't that we should call basically everything a 4 bar. My point is that some people think only horst is a 4 bar, other people think that anything with four bars and a virtual pivot is a 4 bar, and other people just think it's a stupid term to use because it means different things for different people...

2/18/2026 10:53pm And this is why we can't have nice things. "Four bar" is a generic term for a linkage system with... four bars. Axle location has nothing to do with it. Suspension has nothing to do with it. Bikes have nothing to do with it. If you want to call a tire a wheel, go right ahead, it's just not clear...

2/18/2026 10:17pm Mountain bikers HATE that four bar doesn't mean what they think it means. horst? 4 bar. DW? 4 bar. VPP? 4 bar. Maestro? 4 bar. linkage driven single pivot? 4 bar. Delta? 4 bar. First gen Yeti Switch? 4 bar. It goes on. It's a pointlessly generic term to use and if you use it then nobody is really sure...

2/18/2026 11:02am I agree. I used to ride BMX, trials and dirtbikes. Sometimes I want my MTB to ride more like a moto, sometimes I don't.

2/17/2026 10:55pm On a short chainstay bike you get a shorter wheelbase for the same cockpit size and head angle, so it's less stable and cuts a shorter turn. Your feet are closer to the rear wheel so it's easier to feel where it is. It's easier to push in and overwhelm just the rear tire, because when you push with your...

2/10/2026 11:15pm Yeah I was being silly. Centre mounted skis and long chain stays don't have a lot in common.

2/9/2026 9:58pm But what if I like centre-mounted skis but my bike's F:R ratio is 1.89 and I like that too?
