UCI Regs, Part 13, Chapter 3, Article 5. There is a UCI protocol, it was applied and he was not allowed to race afterwards. He may not have known that when he was interviewed but the commissaires all knew.

Definite concussion - really shouldn't race - really shouldn't be *allowed to make the decision* to race or not. Shame on the UCI for not having concussion protocols in place. They can have rules for team jerseys and all the other stuff, but don't have one to cover basic rider safety.

Do they not know that second impact syndrome is deadly? and that there is no helmet ever made that can prevent a concussion?

Second Impact Syndrome, though recognized by physicians, isn't all that widely accepted at this point in the medical community. Not saying he should race (at all) just stating this isn't really the main reason I'm concerned about it.

I know better than probably anyone, post concussive syndrome sucks. Concussions suck. We knew very little about these "mild" injuries when I was doing majority of my dome clappin' (lol) and besides one "noteworthy" concussion, I really didn't have a history. But I did have more than a few konks to the noggin, and they add up. Looking back, its easy to see where I could have done things different, but the information wasn't there. Now its there and we are really doing fuck all to accept it. 100% a blind eye is being turned to this burgeoning problem.

At this point, what we know, is when someone hits their heard, big or small, they should *really* try and minimize the chance of doing it again in the near term. In all truthfulness, we just plain shouldn't hit our heads, period, but we aren't going to live in a bubble. In any case, when there is a loss of consciousness, the rider should be mandatory sitting out for at least 2 weeks, but I'd say longer. There is a lot of evidence the brain is in flux for ~100 days after an event like this.

We should all be doing IMPACT testing. Every rider should have a baseline. When we hit our heads, we should go see if we are back to this baseline before we continue our head konkin' ways. This should be done at the UCI level, and even at the regional/grassroots lever. It is far and away the only and best way to keep our domes as healthy as possible in higher risk activities like this... Otherwise, letting the "thing" that is injured decide if its healthy enough to continue is obviously flawed logic. The brain is broken when concussed. It doesn't have the ability to know if it is healthy or not...

Agreed. And even if not, better to sit out for the weekend rather than ruin your year or career
