Not that I'm part of the gearbox cult or anything, my bike still has a silly little derailleur but oh man do I want to join the cult

I’m not really an advocate for most bikes and definitely see the drawbacks outweighing the pros. But for downhill I’m really surprised it’s not more popular.
The explanation of the gen 1 and gen 2 gearboxes was pretty fascinating. I've heard lots about the 'derailleur in a box' but never anything about those earlier prototypes. Pretty cool.

I had read an article explaining how the first two worked around the time that the third one came out. And I could never understand why people were pushing the derailleur in a box thing. It seems they were both true.
