For sure, I bought one GX chain and quickly realized how much more expensive they are than XO. I don't think it's as pronounced, but I plunk down the up front money for X0 cassettes for the same reason. However, GX cranks all the way.

Thanks so much! Fascinating that you got .75 with that little lateral wear of the chain. My limited sample of three bikes and a couple of spare chains with a little life left suggests I'm getting more lateral wear and less elongation. Wonder if it's a difference in the amount of wet weather riding? Do you ride a lot of winch-and-plummet or more rolling terrain?
PS - We may be breaching the threshold of new realm of bike nerdiness. Also, I'm calling it first right now: there's gonna be a chainwiz within two years.

Wear was closer to 0.6 when I double-checked w/ the Abbey fwiw. Terrain here is very rolling/pedally.

also 12sp eagle axs have shorter cages which heavily impacts shifting performance. once i found this out i ditched it immediately.
Honestly, this lines up with a lot of what I’ve been hearing lately. AXS has its perks, but once the clutch and cage issues show up, it’s hard to ignore how much they affect real-world shifting. Mechanical setups might not be flashy, but the reliability and feel are tough to beat. Your comparison to a Yeti coffee mug—and honestly even a cup coaster—made me laugh because the derailleur really is that oversized. Sounds like going back to mechanical was the right call.
I just replaced my NX Eagle chain with just over 4,000 km on it. It was probably well overdue as there was still some clearance after the chain gauge fell through it... Ridden in mostly granite dust and lubricated with Squirt liquid wax.
And I've just now noticed that my gravel bike's KMC X12 chain is in a similar state after 5,300 km. Ridden only on sealed surfaces but also using Squirt liquid wax.
