Its hard to classify it as a trail bike, but then again, the trail bike spectrum has changed so much in the past 2-3 years. It seems like there are "Down Country Bikes" like the Transition Spur, YT Izzo, and Specialized Epic Evo, and then the "True Trail Bikes" like Santa Cruz Tallboy, Trek Fuel EX 29, Stumpjumper, Norco Optic and such, and then maybe the all mountain name returns with bikes like this and the Stumpjumper EVO, Norco Sight, Knolly Fugitive, and dare I say the Transition Sentinel and Scout?

Seems pretty conservative. 455mm reach and a 75 degree ST angle on a large feels like 2-3 years ago geo.

I’m also quite surprised how much these bike weigh. Been doing some fun endurance races and thought maybe my enduro bike wasn’t the best choice. I was actually looking at the optic from Norco. But it’s the exact weight of my 165/170mm bike. Even the 120mm Revolver is pretty porky. Think I’ll just keep what I have. Last race was 4000m up, that travel was appreciated on the way back down : )

I think the issue is that we want our short travel bikes to be able to endure the same kind of trail abuse as our Enduro bikes for the most part. Manufacturers have recognized this, and while they are using smaller forks and slightly narrowrr wheels on these bikes, the rest of the components are fairly similar in weight, as well as the frames weighing about an extra pound or two in recent years. The big thing I noticed going to a shorter travel 29er, was not the weight, but the agility while descending. These bikes are so flickable and...

I wonder how the Knolly Fugitive ST would have faired. Mine is setup 140mm/120mm, 66.5HT/65.75HT, 76.5ST/76ST. Great test! Would love a new Banshee.

76 degree effective seat tube angle as it sits. Instead of bending the seat tube to look steeper, we use an offset straight seat-tube so people could use the length rather than face interference issues. When combined with shorter seat tube lengths, it allows for 170mm droppers to fit on all sizes of our bikes (and 200mm droppers on MD, LG, and XL) making the limiting factor what the rider wants to run, not the bike. Engineering first.
