Scratching my head thinking this bike looks oddly familiar. Is this frame design a 29 version of KHS's DH650?

Yeah I would completely agree. I don't know how the vital team can consider this a decent value, when the YT base has a better component spec, option for 29 inch wheels, let alone the geometry. Sure you can call it "classic" but is that really doing justice to the reader? While I have loved the content that the VitalMTB team has been putting out for years, I am definitely feel like I am seeing a higher trend to have favorable reviews of major sponsors products, and higher number of "product releases" from those sponsors as well. As a result...

I haven't ridden the Smash, but I have ridden the MegaTrail a few years back. For what it's worth the MegaTrail was a whole different animal, good pedal efficiency, but you could tell that the bike was a bit on the heavy side. Going down the added weight of the frame helped smash through rougher sections of trail, but also made the bike a little harder to jump. Sentinel pedals similarly, maybe a bit better, but overall feels like a lighter poppier bike. Personally, I am not sure if the Sentinel will be too much bike for the vast majority...

Just as a background, I ended up ordering a carbon Sentinel based on my impressions set-out in this review.

Unfortunately I have not ridden the patrol, however I did pedal around the new smuggler while there. Bike felt very similar on the geometry, and a little snappier/quicker acceleration when compared to the sentinel.
