I'm not going to grumble about the total cost, as their road stuff is sick, and works well. I think I also heard each shift is separately encrypted, super high tech. But for mountain biking, if you smoke the rear derailleur, it might cost the same as the new IPhone. That sucks for a component in a precarious location. I'm glad I ride left foot forward, protect that fancy little chicken wing...

The chains are designed exactly for the chainrings and cassette. Look at a SRAM Eagle chain and look at a KMC 12 speed chain. Not same design. This is also why Eagle chains and chainrings are lasting 2 years. Mate a KMC chain to save $20 and eat away your rings and cassette faster.
