Not that wikipedia is necessarily a trusted source, but it says the name came from the white powder coat on the original springs.

Something about the cassette having more room to spread out because of the known transmission position? The other site says the crank and chainrings are the only parts that are backward compatible. Currently commuting on a carbon Synapse and chasing my wife and daughter through the woods on a play-bike-ish Morpheus V Slope. Looking forward to participating in the community here!
