jefedelosjefes Liked a comment about Feature TECH TALK: Air Shocks Versus Coil Shocks, What's Better?

All that talk and no mention of durability and maintenance? Sure, brand new air shocks feel great out of the box, but beat on them for 6 months and then run your comparisons. Air shocks always have this slow degradation of their performance, sorry rockshox, there's nothing your new fancy technology can ever do about this. Coil springs run more consistent for their whole life; no degradation of the spring performance... ever. No friction, no air leaks, no maintainance, no problems. I'll take a 200g weight penalty for that peace of mind and consistent performance any day. My preference has...

100% Agree! Only racers with a mechanic rebuilding their shocks after every race should prefer air. Plus air shocks fade, even the large air can ones on a long run. I have coil on my Nomad v4 and the kinematics are perfect for coil. I'm never running air again. The tiny little bit of extra pop from air shocks is not better than the plushness and predictability of coil, end of story

Just gonna throw this out there, Gwin's Val Di Sol run in 2012 was up there.

I agree with most of your analysis, but I will add some thoughts. I think control and comfort are somewhat mutually exclusive on today's forks unless they are custom valved to your weight. Riders like plush off the top for comfort because over a course of a ride that will wear your hands less as fast and progressive on big hits because that helps with control.

Oh, I'm well aware of how volume spacers work. I'm suggesting those who are all about coil-like performance would do well to remove the spacers in their fork as a test. Generally speaking, higher volume will yield more linear spring rate curves. This is absolutely true in a Lyrik or 36. Is this for you? Well, that depends on what you are after, where you are riding and the amount of travel you have. With a 160mm+ fork, riding chunky terrain on longer (2-3K+) descents I need all the help I can give my hands. In this situation, zero tokens...

I'm calling it now, when the new Santa Cruz bikes drop next week there will be nothing innovative. Just a bunch of geo updates that other bike companies figured out already. Surprised SC hasn't developed their own wheels yet. Amazing how little innovation SC has created after being bought by Pon. You'd think they would have come up with at least 1 innovative feature by now...

Damn, this guy is the Leonardo da Vinci of bikes. He had the axle size, axle spacing, chain position, and wheel size correct way ahead of time. Either that or all bike companies are afraid to innovate and really just follow marketing trends

Good point. I actually love his image more than most, and I like how he treats the sport like its something to be respected, worked hard at, and taken seriously. So yeah, sometimes I just want to complain I guess

When I heard that, I was like: "I can totally get behind that"...because nothing I saw ever comes out right without needing backstory or an in depth explanation of the thought process that led to my response. Ask Turman and Spomer...damn did I start shlt!

Any notes from flat tire defender or from your tests on how long they could last under enduro type riding? Considering how much they are and how hard they are to put on, I hope they could last at least three months for someone who rides once a week. Since competition is heating up in this product segment (cush core, ect) I think the differentiator will be which product will last the longest, not whose is the lightest.

Totally dig the podcast, the super in depth test session reviews, and interviews like this one. Glad Vital is publishing long form content. Vital is really upping their game compared to other mtb media

Gwin broke a bunch of spokes at the last race. The difference in drive/non-drive spoke tension and the extreme spoke angles might not be working together so well. You don't see broken spokes at a world cup often. E*thirteen needs to crank up the forces on their wheel tests.

I took a screen shot recently off Gwin's instagram. The shadow of the front triangle looks exactly like a V10. No way that's a YT. I'm confidently predicting Santa Cruz.
