Praxis Brodium SL Flat Pedal

The Podium flat pedal has a long and storied history. It all started many years ago with the Point One Podium which introduced what was certainly a fairly radical pedal shape at the time. Gamut acquired Point One in 2014, and released their version of the Podium pedal in 2016. It was extremely thin, with a shape that still worked well for generating grip, although the small-ish platform and the large inboard bearing bulge were not to everyone’s liking. Gamut stopped making the Podium pedal after just a few years, but Praxis carried the torch forward by releasing their take on the shape in 2024, with blessings from Gamut. In 2025, they changed its name to Brodium, to avoid having to deal with some international trademark issues, but the pedal remained unchanged – until now. Praxis has just introduced the second generation of the Brodium, and we’ve given the high-end SL version a spin to see what they’ve done with it.

Initial Impressions

The Brodium has been using a traditional spindle system since the 2024 version, although the roots of the old open spindle design are still clear to see. For that 2024 version, the pedal platform also got quite a bit bigger. Now, Praxis has grown the second generation Brodium a little bit yet, to boost both platform real estate and concavity again.

We took a tape measure to the Brodium, as we do with all the flat pedals we test, and here are the key measurements:

• Concavity (mm, with pins): 7

• Thickness (mm, without pins): 17
• Thickness (mm, with pins): 30

The result of the Brodium redesign is a very generous “PTA” (“Pin-to-Axle”, the distance from the outermost pin to the crank arm), with what is still a quite thin pedal body. There is a certain amount of concavity built into the pedal body itself, although it remains minimal if you take into account the area that houses the spindle. The pins are long though, so the effective concavity is ample, and the total thickness is right up there with pedals that have even thicker bodies. There is simply no other way to deliver this amount of concavity while still making room for a full bearing and bushing system, especially one that does away with any kind of inboard bearing bulge. In terms of numbers, it will certainly take the fight to the top contenders in our long-standing flat pedal rankings, helped along by the generous PTA measurement, deep concavity and low weight.

Although the total thickness of 30mm is not in the ultra-thin category anymore, the heavily chamfered shape of the Brodium with a pulled-in rear section gives it good ability to slide past trailside obstacles instead of hanging up on them. The SL version has been aggressively machined to shave as much weight as possible from the pedal, while still leaving enough material around the pins to give them something to hold onto. On the subject of the pins, they thread in from the rear which means you are more likely to be able to remove them if you should snap one off, and their height can be modified using the supplied spacers. 

The Brodium SL is a premium pedal, and as such, it’ certainly isn’t cheap. If you like the shape but don’t want to part with two hundred of your hard-earned US dollars, you can opt for the regular Brodium which is priced at a more moderate $140 USD. To justify the higher price, the SL features more intricate machining work, and “gothic arch” bearings that should last longer thanks to an arch design that provides 4 contact points as opposed to the regular 2.

 The inboard side uses a bushing, and the whole system is fully rebuildable with individual spares available to order from Praxis as needed.

On The Trail

We were pleasantly surprised by the performance of the previous generation of this pedal, and even more so now with the gen 2 Brodium. The pedal has grown a little bit, both in terms of effective concavity and platform size – the result is more grip and a more locked-in feeling, especially for riders with bigger feet. Praxis has also managed to completely do away with the inside bearing bulge now, which means you are free to use the entirety of the platform to rest your hooves on.

When we tested the Podium pedal a couple of years ago, we noted that it could sometimes feel a little bit disconnected in the rear part of the platform, as that part is notably narrower than the front part. That is still somewhat true of the Brodium, but the overall increase in concavity and size helps mitigate this aspect, and the result is a pedal that sneaks closer to the class leaders in terms of pin placement and grip. The real party trick of the Brodium is its ability to provide such a generous platform size without feeling too bulky, definitely worth considering if those traits are high on your list of requirements.

What’s The Bottom Line?

The 2nd gen Praxis Brodium is a modernized and updated take on one of the more unusual shapes in flat pedal history, and it has now grown into its dimensions to deliver a very high level of performance on the trail. The grip is very good, perhaps not quite up there with the outright class leaders but certainly not far off, and the shape of the pedal offers exceptional platform real estate without going overboard with the external dimensions. The pedal is fully rebuildable, which means you have a good chance of being able to enjoy it for seasons to come. If this sounds like it ticks all the boxes for you, all you have to do now is choose between the somewhat heavier regular version and the premium SL.
