This is a little more in-depth than the question, but if you are interested in a paid MTB specific program I’ve been really impressed by Todd Shumlick’s (trainer of Gwin and Rude) 4 week and 8 week plans.

I did the dumbbell / band version - there’s also a full gym equipment version - and found the exercises to be really low risk and also helpful for riding. You’re not deadlifting 200lbs with no supervision or feedback where it could be easy to hurt yourself and the exercises focus more on full range of motion and putting your body under tension. Most motions combine leg/arm and core stability, making it feel pretty efficient - you get a lot from a few movements. It does include riding in the plan, not just strength, but I thought it was really well done.

The PerformX site gives you a little leeway (if you pick the 4 week one you might have it unlocked for 6 weeks?) but eventually it does expire and you don't have access anymore. I just tried to keep really good notes...

Kettlebells - swings, presses, squat, farmer carry. Master those 4 movements and guaranteed it will carry over to the bike. Best form of training I have found that works not only for mtb but overall strength and endurance. However, there is a learning curve to kettlebells. Best to take it slow and ensure technique is spot on - don’t want to lose time off bike bc you messed something up training to be better on the bike.

Kettlebells are nice for some things but I wouldn't suggest them for overall strengthening. For swings, kettle bells are the best and only real choice. Shoulder presses I would put into that category as well BUT for squats, deadlifts, farmers carries and bench press you really need to be able to load up those with weight and KB's aren't the best option for that at all. This is where barbells come into play.

The average rider could likely get up to 135 lbs for a squat and deadlift within a couple weeks or less and you can't find a 135 lb kettle bell, even if you could you would have to goblet squat that boulder which would smoke your arms before you could even get a descent leg burn from the squat.

My son trains with Lab One Two, which is a PerformX affiliate and does their programming. It's solid.

Fit4Racing is another one that a lot of people really like and then Train to Ride with Dee Tidwell is another.

As others said, you can sign up for a limited program, get the idea of the type of training to do, then craft your own based on it. The main issue will be if you're wanting to do periodization to fit into a race schedule, but you can look that up and sort of figure it out if you aren't wanting to work with a trainer.

Hello to all in this 'strengthen' chat and forum. Todd Schumlick from PerformX Training here. Great to see some you are interested in off-bike training, specifically strength training for MTB. I just had a friend fire me a message about this forum chat....so I came over and created an account! Reading through this chat, it looks like many of you have some great advice. This is definitely a good time of year to add some strength training, so that your fitness isn't too "one dimensional" (only developed on-bike). With the PROPER strength training program, you will not only improve 1) on-bike strength and power, but you'll also improve 2) injury prevention, 3) riding posture and position, 4) energy system, 5) endurance, and more. You will also have something else fun/healthy to do during the winter months....possibly even with a friend, partner, or family member. Strength training for MTB isn't just for professionals and competitors either....as I believe we should all play "the long game" as well....meaning invest in your health and wellness. Who doesn't want to continue to be a rippa at 60+ years of age???!!! Ok, enough strength training promotion. If anyone is interested in our online training, see performxtraing.com for our 'Online Training' options. If interested, I can even do one better by offering 1) a 20% discount on all our online training programs (use code VITAL20 at check-out) and 2) offer guidance with choosing the correct online program, just email us at info@performxtraining.com, and I'll assist you personally with choosing a program/s. Let's go!

Thanks, Todd! But what we really want to know is what's Gwin riding this season? Laughing

My son loves working with Addison. Great stuff happening with that program around here. Hope you get down to our neck of the woods before too long.

Thank you very much, if that is the bad thing, it would be nice if once you paid you had access to it for life... on Monday I will start the training and see how everything goes, since now I already have information :D

It looks good, I will look at it, the conclusion would be either to do a training with everything learned or hire an online service from a trainer, that is the truth....

You are welcome! AG will be racing. And yes, Addison is great! We're fortunate to have him onboard with PerformX.

I’ve found that mixing in some strength work really helps with MTB endurance and control. I usually focus on leg and core exercises like squats, lunges, and planks, plus some upper-body work for better handling on descents. Lately, I’ve also been using Yoga Go a couple of times a week. It’s been awesome for flexibility and balance, which makes a huge difference on technical trails. A short yoga session before or after rides really helps with recovery too.
