First Look: 2015 Five Ten Kestrel and Freerider Contact Shoes

<b>After years of development with the help of Five Ten's Pro athletes, the long awaited Kestrel clipless shoe is ready for production.</b>
<b>The shoe combines high performance and traction while remaining comfortable. A carbon infused shank will make it the stiffest shoe in their lineup.</b>
<b>The sole has Five Ten's softest Mi6 rubber is in the toe and heel and a slightly harder C4 rubber surrounding the cleat.</b>
<b>They walk the fine line between weather resistance, light weight, and maximum breathability.</b>
<b>A reinforced toe around the strike zone provides protection against impacts.</b>
<b>The ratcheting BOA closure system is incredibly easy to use.</b>
<b>You can snug or loosen the shoe with just one hand, even while riding.</b>
<b>The Kestrel weighs just 403g (size 43) and will retail for $180. Availability is expected to be April 2015.</b>
<b>Also new is the Freerider Contact, previously known as the Freerider VXi. It features a slim new design, updated uppers, mesh tongue, and the sole is sewn to the toe box for better durability. The sole still uses their ultra grippy Mi6 rubber combined with a smooth portion around the ball for easier repositioning. Weight is 390g (size 43). MSRP $120.</b>

Defn not my cup of tea. The rear third looks like a budget sneaker. Not feeling the huge text logo either. They have no shortage of shoes for every style though... from ballet-slipper looking things to casual kicks. 5.10 does tend to go overboard on the logos though. I think my Karvers had something like 11 5.10 logos on each shoe!

Not fugly at all. I love this shoe. it almost looks normal off the bike and is super performance featured on the bike. I would buy a few pairs as my 14yo and 9yo agree.

The problem with my running shoes with BOA is that when you hit somewhere nearby the BOA opens and needs rewind...if this is a shoe for trail riding i dont thing that BOA is a good idea...

Ah, I see your frustration now. Those are the old North Face Hedgehodges I'm pretty sure. They were discontinued because the boa configuration on the heel side (rear facing) was problematic as you mentioned. It was too easy to bump it open. It works MUCH better when mounted on the tongue or the eyestay (like the shoe above).

I'm with nonos. I've had bad experiences with BOA systems. If 5.10 would only put a flap over the BOA system (like on Mavic Crossmax), this could potentially end my search for that perfect SPD dh/trail shoes. So tired of conventional laces on SPD shoes. Looks cool to me though.

I've been running a prototyped Boa system on my downhill shoes for the last two seasons with zero issues. Works great... especially in wet or muddy conditions where my laces used to get caked.

ree, there is only one universal metric when it comes to shoe sizing between brands and that is the physical CM length on the shoe. Look up what DC shoes CM length is and then find the closest thing to it in 5.10's sizing. it is usually the last sizing scheme alongside Euro, Mondo and whatever else. That should do the trick.

Bums me out how much new stuff 5.10 keeps coming out with for clipless, while the flats line still resemble modified skate shoes. How about some Velcro straps or Boa system on the flat pedal stuff as well? I've went through three pairs of Shimano MT41's waiting for 5.10 to jump on board. I really don't care if they look normal off the bike. They are bike shoes. Make them functional.

I'm ok with the boa system, I have them on the backside of the heel on a pair of Lakes and they work great. I also have the new 5.10 VXi clipless and flats, which both look way better than these. I love both, but I don't like the Velcro over the laces on the clipless VXi's.

If they got rid of the words "FIVE TEN" on the sides it'd be okay. Leaving the logos would be fine. We want a shoe, not over the top branding.
